    Soft/Hard Stepping

Soft stepping is taking a 3 iron shaft and putting in the 4 iron, 4 iron in the 5 and so on, correct?

Hard stepping is doing the oppostie, correct?

My question is, for a taper set of iron shafts, if you soft step, would the irons not be longer in length? And if you were then to butt trim to original length, would the effects of the soft stepping not be nullified? Would you not be playing with the exact same flex as before?

The effect of is not nullified as the first step will end up further away from the ground. It is not about the length it's about the step pattern and tip action.

OK, but you can't trim taper tip shafts. So would the step not be the same throughout the set and all shafts just trimmed from the butt? I'm not talking about Black Gold or PX or anything like that. Just normal Dynamic Gold.

How can you make a shaft play stiffer or weaker?

    To play stiffer:
Tapered tip shafts: "step the shaft down"- since tapered tip shafts come in different lengths, a person can put the 3 iron shaft into the 2 iron club and so on, therefore shortening the tip to 1st step section and increasing the stiffness about a sub flex.

To play weaker: Tapered Tip Shafts: "Step the shaft up"-Put the 2 iron shaft into the 3 iron head and so on, therefore lengthening the tip to 1st step section and decreasing the stiffness about a sub flex.

If a person does this to their clubs they will have clubs with stiffer or weaker tip sections therefore the club will "feel" like it is playing stiffer or weaker than before.

Put any stepped shaft set against a wall and you 'll see that the steps go up in 1/2 increments. Soft or hard stepping just puts the fist step further or closer to the ground.

Yes. Rifle frequency matched shafts go up by 4 cpms per club. The weight of the head will make the the frequency go up or down depending on which way you go.

So soft stepping a set of 5.5 shafts by one (3 in the 4) would become a 5.0 ?

Sub flex so somewhere between 5.2. If they've already been butt trimmed the lenghths will vary as well. For this to work on already butt trimmed shafts you'll have to adjust the club to its original length.
