2008 Ryder Cup Thread
Well, all the thrashing about begins on Friday. The Euros have made the trip across the pond (well, those who don't live in the US already) to the heart of Kentucky, and Valhalla CC to contest this years matches. The long-term weather forecast calls for hot and humid weather with plenty of sun. Of course, those of us who live here in Ottawa know that meteorological prognostication is sketchy at best, and it could very well rain cats and dogs.
Tiger Woods on the DL not withstanding, this years event seems to have enough question marks to have Ladbrokes and Vegas setting the line at a razor thin 5/4 edge in favour of the American side. It should be an intriguing match-up with each side debuting a fair number of "rookies" (6 for the US, and 4 for the Euros), along with both captains making so-called controversial picks to round out their respective squads.
-Can Lefty step up and become the "big dog" of the US side, in the absence of you-know-who?
-Can Paddy continue his torrid pace in meaningful events, and continue to dominate?
-Will Sergio finally take the mantle of Super-Spaniard with his mix of emotion and new-found maturity, along with his new-found putting stroke?
-Will Kenny Perry thrive on "home cooking", or will food poisoning set in?
This is by far my favourite event in all of golf, because it always manages to produce some memorable moments. It's a wonderful display of risk/reward, tactical, and emotional play, jammed into 3 days of loud cheers, louder gasps, victory, and heartbreak. It makes winners out of also-rans, and goats out of "sure things". It's world class golfers going head-to-head against the course and each other. There's nothing more fun, or frustrating, than match play. It's golf in its purest form.
I'm looking forward to 3 days of very entertaining, and extremely competitive golf.

I've got a hunch that one or two rookies are going to step to the forefront. And I'd be leaning towards Anthony Kim. This kid seems pretty confident, but not arrogant. I'm looking forward to the matches.

My heart is always with Europe .... however there seems to be a bit of unrest over picks and captains assistants , hopefully this does not follow the players onto the course , but i think the yanks look a little steadier this time around.
Its gonna be close .... GO EUROPE !At the end of the day ... It gets dark

I'm also in the "Go Europe" camp. I think most non-US residents will be. I somehow enjoy the fact that the US get handed their butts so often in this.
Still, I'm not happy that Tiger is out. What can I say, it will be less of a contest for the Europeans. I guess golf really isn't the same as football.Life dinnae come wit gimmies so yuv got nae chance o' gitt'n any from me.

I would like to see the US win and make the tournament more competitive. The last couple have been pretty lame.

I think the US will be twice the team without Tiger.
At this point in time, I'd much rather see the US win in a closely fought battle that goes down to the wire on Sunday. If the Euros win another one handily, what does the future hold for the Ryder Cup?

If I had to choose I'd say I'm pulling for the US, but to echo the previous comments, what matters most is that there's still a reason to play the matches when Sunday rolls around. I'd hate to see a blow-out for either side.
As far as US players go, I don't see Curtis or Weekly doing much, and IMO JB Homes is a terrible captains pick.Al Gore didn't invent the internet, but he did invent global warming.

I'm pulling for the US team but I do want to see Lefty handed his butt on a silver platter

GO EUROPE, although I think the US will win this one (and quite handily at that).
Can't wait for the excitement to begin.

The US dominated for so many years up until 1985. Since then the USA has only won 3 and tied one. It seems as though Europe is turning the tables. I'd like to see a close match not like the 18 1/2 to 9 1/2 win in 2006.

And they're off!!
For those of us who can't watch it live, I'm starting a **SPOILER** thread for those who want to talk about what's happening live, and as a warning to the rest who may be recording the event to watch later.
Enjoy! When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.
