Provisional and unplayable?
John is in a match. John’s tee shot lands 2 feet to the right of a large tree. John swings right handed. He squeezes up to the tree, does not bend any branches and takes his next stroke. The ball veers right towards a forest and it appears that it may be lost outside of a hazard.
John announces that he is playing a provisional ball. He drops his provisional ball in the exact same spot as his original but he announces that he will be taking an unplayable under rule 28. He takes two club lengths from where the provisional lies, drops the ball and then swings at the provisional. This second ball ends up on the green.
Two cases to consider:- John finds his original ball.
- John does not find his original.

I'm thinking:
John finds his original ball:
Wherever it is, he is lying 2.
John does not find his original ball:
Lying 5 on the green. (Tee shot, stroke from beside tree, lost ball stroke, unplayable stroke, shot to the green)Sucking at golf is it's own reward.
