Skycaddie actually has someone go to each course and individually mark yardages, hazards, etc. and then upload the respective information.
Golf Buddy, Golflogix, etc. use satellite maps to gather information.
As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.
Hope that helps.

Actually that's not quite true, Golf Buddy does send someone out to map courses as well. This was verified to me by the Canadian affiliate of Golf Buddy.....Yes!Golf located in Richmond Hill.
However, for my region (BC) they admitted that with all the courses they have here, it is going to take some time to get courses mapped. But yes, some they do use satellite maps.

i would be wary if golf buddy has said they send out mappers. i have not heard of them doing that to any course. They have used satellite imaging for all courses in Ontario that they have.
sky caddie yes sends a team out to map by walking, well worth it

I started using a product called Free Caddie - www.freecaddie.com. It's an application that loads onto my Windows Mobile phone, I'm using the Bell HTC PPC6800 with GPS activated. I made a quick map of Predator using Live Maps and then verified the mappings with my laser rangefinder when I was playing the course. It was very accurate, within a yard or two. The Pro version, the one that costs money, lets you tweak the course as you play.
The course took me about 10 minutes to build and download. It could be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others.

gps
Some info you should know before buying.
Skycaddie has a yearly subscription fee golf buddie doesn't . Not sure of the costs.
We have asked sky caddie to map our course for the last 3 years, they have not showed up yet.
Another course here did have a mapper show up not a team of mappers.
He was on the 18 hole course for about an hour, only marked tees and greens , only some of the hazards and left.
So you don't always get what you pay for.
