I think 'Sillywilly' got this idea from a local aquarium club that charges an annual membership fee.

I have to mention that the Forum on this website is free for non-paying members. The annual fee actually covers club events and discounts and local stores.

Now if dan could find a way for us all to pay an annual fee to get us all discounts and local courses that would be grea........ waaaaaaaaaaait a second he already does this and its awesome.

the site can get more revenue based on volume of traffic... (selling adds, etc) and other service added functionality... I think it would be a mistake...

No! I value the friends I have made, and the info shared but what would justify a minimal charge? What would I be getting for my money that I do not get now for free?

In general, pay per use sites for golf have not worked in the past. Trust me... I've belonged to one or two which went to a pay format and immediately died. Golfweb comes most readily to mind.
However many sites have had success with an upgraded or premium membership. A basic membership is free and allows access to most of the forum services, however for an extra fee, a Premium member gets a few more cool toys to play with. On some sites a Premium membership is required to access the Swap Shop. It seems cumbersome at first but it definitely keeps out the riffraff

You really need to find something constructive to do with your spare time

What causes these strange thoughts? I would like to know so I can avoid whatever it is you are eating, drinking of otherwise ingesting

I think a pay per use would be a mistake. Not sure if I would pay to see an advertisers advertisement.

It reminds me of a Golf Show. We pay admission to basically go shopping. Can you imagine if the malls or any other store charged you to enter their store to shop? I bet you would not enter that store.

"Welcome to Walmart. Your admission price is $5.00 please"

    You've never heard of Costco?

Other forums, like Reid says, have gone pay for premium use (WRX, 4GEA just for starters). It just depends on the business model. This is just a guess, but I think Dan uses the forum to drive traffic to the main OG site and to a lesser degree, RM. If the forum costs start outweighing the benefits, then I'm sure he'd look at a new model.

Reid has some very valide points. I wouldn't be against the idea of paying a small annual fee to be able to post in the classifieds. You could browswe them but couldn't post a thread or in a thread without a membership.

In that case I would pay.

Of course I have heard of Costco. St Thomas is not in the sticks you know We actually shop at Costco, but the only reason we do is because my wife's brother in law has a business membership which allows him to have extra cards.

Otherwise I doubt we would have a membership there.

I was visiting another golf forum which had premium memberships. That forum was lucky if there was 5 new messages posted in a week. They had lots of sponsors, no participation. Even the free members did not post.

So I feel Dan has a success on his hands right now. I rarely post in the BST section so I doubt I would pay a fee to do so. I just trade my clubs in, less hassle than selling them here. No shipping involved!

You have to keep in mind that half the members here found the OG in the first place because we were searching for clubs online. The reason?... we were too cheap to buy them new at the store

I think if you were new to the site you may see the $10 fee and say forget it. But to those of us who are "hooked" already, we'd pay for sure. Well, most of us would anyway.
