Hey MusicMan,
Mmmmmm. An SLR beginner. Not the easiest way to start these days. Can make a lot of expensive mistakes with film. When you start with a DSLR at least you can see immediate feedback and can erase until you get it right. A much easier learning tool. In the end much less costly.
I am not much more than a beginner myself, practically. Haven't used a regular SLR for years.
Before you go hands on with anyone though it would be better to get some basics in an easy book, Something like Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson. It is in Chapters, you could just have a look at first to get the general idea.
Actually Dan is the pro
If you are in Montreal like your profile says then I can recommend a really good photographer teacher there. I am considering taking a couple of lessons from him myself. I have no idea as to his rates though.
I don't know anything about he N80, although I presume it has a P mode which would make it a lot easier for you to start out with. Basically that is automatic exposure.

If you can't get anyone more qualified then I would be willing to have a look. But no promises as to my success.

haha... thanks Brit ill let you know... just took a few pictures outside for fun messing around with the shutter speeds, we'll see how they turn out when i get it developed. i would buy a DSLR, but i dont have the cash and this was free.
its got these colourd "filters" i guess they are. with different tints, and ones with mesh inside them that i dont know what they are for, or what conditions they are for
PS. i am still in ottawa until June 1st

Ok I don't know how much of a newbie you are, but basically if you are in P mode the camera selects both the shutter speed and the aperture. If you are in A then the camera just automatically sets the Shutter and if you are in Shutter then the camera sets the Aperture. Due to irregular lighting conditions though you may have to use the exposure compensation to get the correct exposure. If you are in manual you choose both the shutter and the aperture. There is a meter you can see in the viewfinder and when it is in in the middle that is a normal exposure.
Enjoy
What lenses did you get? Some of the old primes are really nice
Dan may correct me

Well the lens is attached to the front of the camera and there should be lettering like 35-70mm 3.5-5.6 or like a prime would be 35mm 1.8 or something like that. The maker too

I hear you, but the film and processing adds up. I don't think I've used my SLR in at least 5 years. That said, film photography is lots of fun, just lacks that instant gratification factor. I used to print my own pictures, a little bit harder than photoshop but you could still really have fun with it.

film processing is cheap now, and the price is going to go down more as more people are using digital.

Just wanted to chime in. What is mentioned below this is correct. About your filters each filter that you have will produce a different effect, but when you use them even if the exposure meter shows in the middle you will have to either over expose or under expose depending on the filter you are using.

Ken Rockwell knows his stuff, so I thought I would post this link here for you. If you have any questions I would be more than happy to help you out.
