    Adding Extensions

    If I was to take a 40" shaft and add a 1" extension, would it play long enough for a 4/5 wd? I don't like adding more than 1" when an extension is needed, so if this is not possible it won't be a route I'll pursue.

    Steel it would;

    Driver=43 inches
    3wood=42 inches
    5 wood=41 inches

    It's actually a graphite shaft. The shaft was pulled from a 7wd, so I figured adding an inch would work. But I'm assuming the 40" is the total length of the shaft uninstalled. Do you not usually have the shaft a little shorter than what the final playing length will be? Does the install not add an inch or two?

    Why don't you dry assemble it and see what the swingweight comes out at? If it is close it's probably OK

    Depends on the club it's going into. An inch would be about right for most fairway woods.

    Like Reid says, dry fitting it will tell you for sure.

    I'm not too concerned with the swing weight. I can always add lead tape to bring that up, but if it's going to play 1" or more shorter I'll pass. But if I can get it to a least .5" shorter then I'll consider it.

    Depends on hosel depth. Allow 1/8 for grip cap.

    If 42 is your goal then cut to 41 7/8.

    Let's see here .. first of all has this shaft been tip trimmed to spec for a 4/5 wd?

    Let's assume that it has. My guess for a blind bore install with a 40" shaft that you will have a playing length between 41-41.25"; therefore falling in the neighbourhood of 42" with the extension.. Sounds close to me.

    It's been tip trimmed for a 7 wd, but seeing as how it's a r-flex, I'm hoping it will work for a 4/5 wd, will it?

    No problemo Geoff. However one thing I should note is that the more I read in this thread, the more I think the shaft you have is not going to work. I would spend a few dollars on a proper shaft rather than try to make an R-flex graphite shaft trimmed for a 7 wood into a 4/5 wood . Lengthening it is going to soften it further so you might end up playing with a Ladies flex shaft at any decent swingweight.
    On the other hand, if you wear the right shade of lipstick it might work

    Based on how he was hitting it at Bethpage, ladies flex is appropriate.

    Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

    That's ok, it saved me from having to come up with a witty comeback regarding the lipstick.

    Thank God. I thought it was only me. I read the title and thought he was doing something to his hair like my daughter did.

    The advantage of getting a new shaft is 10fold as one can adjust for proper length and proper lie angle before cutting it. Fairway woods as you know are not bendable(except for a few) therefore the right lie can be obtained with the right length.

    How do we know if the trimming for a 7w is not the same amount as a 4/5w ? Ya gots ta dry fit this thing, measure the lenght, and determine how much extention you need for the lenght you are looking for. I say give it a try. What the hell, if it does not work, try plan B.
