I have a problem.... shank shank shank
i went to the range yesterday, not happy. I'be been working on hitting down on the ball all summer. I took a divot with every iron and wedge in the bag, what an awesome feeling!!! But the problem, for most of the shots the club was wide open at impact and I can't figure out why... i' hoping that its because my left wrist is bent backwards at the top of my swing.. something that I've recently started working on but it might be something else... any suggestions?

Some people are like Slinkies... they're really good for nothing, ... but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs...

Without seeing you swing, check the following.
1. Taking away the club too far on the inside.
2. Sliding your hips too much during your downswing. Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

Keep asking questions and advice on shanks and I guarantee your shank will improve until you are the 'Shank King'

Very easy to solve this problem. See a CPGA Pro and take some lessons. Problem solved!

Honestly, I have suffered the shanks on and off for years. I worked with Warren Grant this winter on my over the top tendency that I sometimes fall into and I truly believe it is the answer to my own case of the shanks.
Please don't ask me to describe how to do it. I have my own keys to work on and yours may be different. See a CPGA pro and ask what you can do about this condition and follow his direction. Good luck.Life dinnae come wit gimmies so yuv got nae chance o' gitt'n any from me.

hacker... I hope your offer was golf related... LOL
Dan, I have a feelings its one of two things
1. Taking away the club too far on the inside.
2. still to open at the top of my swing and can't close it in time
anyone have any drills to get more square at impact? The drills I used for hitting down on the ball worked amazing this winter. First ball i hit at the range was probably the best 6iron I have ever hitwilly

I would take the Golden Bear's advice and start with checking my grip.

If your hitting down on it that means that you could be moving your body too much. Watch your weight transfer and even though your hitting down on the ball, stay behind it!! Hope this helps.

He means don't let your upper body and head get ahead of the ball before impact. Stay behind the ball.

Your clubface can also open up if your right wrist (if you're right handed) is bent backwards at impact. An easy way to see this is practice some chip shots and check the angles of your wrist and look at the position of the clubface at impact. I suggest practicing these chips in slow motion just to see what's happening
