Wow! thanks guys glad you like them. I am still pretty new to my DSLR. I got my first one, Nikon D80, last March and traded it at Christmas for my nice new baby, the Nikon D300. So far so good
Interesting question Sillywilly. they are soooo different. I find photography tough because it is also a matter of taste, someone will really like something and someone else won't know what they saw in it. You can start getting the technique decently, but the artistic side is another matter.
Ok, I will have to choose golf. It is incredibly challenging, it gets you outdoors and exercising and gives you instant highs. I would LOVE to be great at golf.

Keep your photography as a hobby. Shooting for $$ is fun at first, but after spending 23 years as a full time photographer the only thing I shoot now is golf courses. I still really enjoy that. I hardly ever touch the camera just for fun anymore.

Yes, I will keep it as a hobby I think under pressure I wouldn't like it nearly as much. A friend of mine is a wedding photographer. I can't imagine what that would be like
I have much to learn, and if I stop for a while I find I have to relearn a lot. Still have to think about all the controls. I think it would take a lot of shooting for it to become second nature. Then, there is the computer side. Which is another whole ballgame.
Some people have a really good eye, and can make ordinary objects and scenes, extraordinary. I think you have to be born with that, don't think I have a chance.
What sort of photography did you do Dan?

I was a wedding photographer. For a couple of years I did grad pictures during the week, but that got boring really fast. I worked for Fleischer Ottawa Wedding Specialists for 23 years. I figure I have done over 1000 weddings. I won some awards and was senior photorapher (under the owner) for most of that time. The last 5 years or so I felt like I was just going through the motions. The work looked fine, but I was uninspired so I hung it up. That was about 8 years ago, after I started OG I did both for about 4 years.
Much of my weekday hours at Fleischer's were spent retouching - old school, wet dies and airbrush. Not a very marketable skill anymore! I remember the first seminar I went to on digital imaging. I remember thinking that it was the most dramatic development since the electronic flash. Gonna change the business, and it did.
Now as I said, I just shoot golf courses.
BTW LB, it looks to me like your eye is pretty good. Enjoy!Life dinnae come wit gimmies so yuv got nae chance o' gitt'n any from me.

Dan you play golf, you run a golf website and the only pictures you take are golf related. Are you worried that one day you are going to get sick of golf?

Neat Dan, I am sure you have loads of good memories of peoples special day and it must make you feel good to know your pictures are all over Ottawa giving them special memories.
The retouching sounds like it would be nice to do after all the shooting too. I did do some black and white processing at home, ohhhh maybe 20 years ago. seems like yesterday. When it isn't fun anymore it is time to move on though. I am glad for you that you have found something you love.

Great shots Moe!.. I think Barbado's suites you...
Do they celebrate St. Patrick's day there? Some people are like Slinkies... they're really good for nothing, ... but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs...

I got a fever. And the only prescription is more golf equipment.

Hey Little Brit,
I used to be an avid photographer using 35mm Nikon equipment. I'm interested in buying a Nikon DSLR, since I've got a pile of Nikon lenses. I'm not sure if they're all compatible.
I was intrigued by you saying you had the Nikon D80, but traded it for the D300. I really don't know a lot about each camera body, but what was it you didn't like about the D80, and wanted to switch to the D300?
I'm considering both, but having never owned a DSLR, I'm just beginning my research.
Thanks,
Hackzaw

Hi there,
Just got back today from my lovely trip
Truthfully, I picked up the D300 and just had to have it. It is a sickness called NAS (Nikon aquisition syndrome) I also picked up 3 new lenses .
In reality the D80 will serve anyone very well.
The D300 is a more pro camera than the D80, faster focussing, lower noise, more FPS, larger incredible back screen, 51 point focussing, much better exposure and white balance, but you do have to pay a lot more for that. It is an amazing camera and is the newest camera and technology out from Nikon that has had just recieved very high praise from all reviewers.
It is just altogether a more pro camera than the D80. More rugged, more weatherproofed, which of course makes it heavier, which can be a negative. I call it my beast My hubby says his camera seems girly compared to mine. he has the 40D. Canon.
To conclude, basically I would suggest you see the cameras in the store, how it feels to you is very important. The rumour mill suggests that the D80 will soon be replaced with the newer technology likely much more like the D300 only smaller, less weatherproofed and less FPS. Probably a D90. So I wouldn't recommend buying a new D80 at this point, but there should be some good deals on lightly used ones.
You are likely able to use your old lenses. Nikon are very good about compatibility, but it is possible that they don't autofocus and on the very old lenses you might have to do manual exposure. It is pretty easy to find out though.
I hope that helps
Feel free to ask more.
