    South/East End - Membership on a budget

    Hey guys,

I figured that I played about $600 worth of golf last year and would have played much more 9 hole rounds after work if I didn't think paying for 9 holes was a bit of a rip. So I'm looking into a membership this year so if I do want to go play 9 holes on a thursday evening I wont have a second thought.

Now i'm looking around the site trying to find the best deal. I'm not looking for a super nice course but I am looking for something that'll keep me interested. Doesn't have to be a hard course because I am a 20 handicapper and I'm happy wiht my place in life

So far I'm looking at poplar grove (because I can get in the intermediate membership rate).. I'll be getting a membership with my friend who's 27.. I'm 26.

    the budget is $1000.00...

so let the ideas fly guys... Thanks

Scott, have a look in the 'Featured Courses' in the left hand forum menu. There are some descent prices for some not so bad courses.

I have, sorry.. I guess I'm looking for recommendations. Or if there are any courses that arn't featured down that way that have good prices.
metcalfe looked nice but the 27 yearold wont be able to get the 'intermediate' membership price which would put that course out of budget
poplar grove doesnt look as nice but has the price we're both looking for.

Any other options for us? mainly to the east/or south about 20-25 minute drive from wakley and the 417

The only ones I can think of in the price range are Bearbrook and Hammond.

Conditions at Poplar Grove are not bad at all. Overall it's pretty tight. Some long narrow holes and some short holes to. The layout would be better if it had a few more mid-length holes. The greens are rather small and fairly flat. To score well you need to hit long and straight. Accurate irons will be needed for the long par 4s with small greens. Putting is not really the challenge on those greens.

Conditions at PG have improved over the last couple of years---price is right. I am not sure about Hammonds prices.. I sometimes cringe when I mention Bearbrook---the latest news is that it is up for sale and I really don't know if that means anything. I have played it quite a few times and when the conditions were decent I really like the course---it is quite diversified. If you have read any of the threads; there are a lot of opinions on the course......I do know that a lot of guys here have said "if they had the $$$$$"---there is a lot of potential.
    Does the 2nd hole-n-one come easier ?

Hammond is not long, but has some nice holes and is always in great shape! Polar Grove is ok, Bearbrook is ok. I would choose Hammond hands down, however the other 2 are a lot less busy and don't hold nearly as many tourneys. I can play Bearbrook on a Sat morning and tee off at 7 and be home at 11.

That doesn't really benefit him for 9 hole rounds.

Good idea. EG has some 9 hole courses and with CG you can play Poplar Grove for $12 so who cares if you pay for 18 and only play 9. All three programs have tons of courses at discount rates that would negate the 'paying for 9 holes is a rip off' feeling.
