Made the Cut, Did not finish?!?!
I know that the MDF rule was intended for large fields (usually pro-am events like Pebble), but why is everyone at 140 this week at the Sony Open marked with MDF? There's a note at the top of the leaderboard page that this is a new rule this year... weird!

Far down the leaderboard, several players were hot under the collar. The PGA TOUR changed its cut policy for this year, and it sent 18 players home early with $9,699 in official money, 46 points toward the FedExCup, but no tee time for the weekend.
The new policy allows for top 70 and ties, but when the number of players who make the cut exceeds 78 players, only the closest number to 70 players return for the final two rounds. In this case, 69 players finished at 1 under.

It's not like this should be a surprise to the guys on tour. This was a done deal last year.
Simple answer, play better if you want to play on the weekend. Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

Agreed, but I don't think the rule was applied this way for all tournaments... no? Seems like you either should make the cut, or not.

The rule is only being applied this year for the first time.
As for making the cut or not, that's still the case. You either make the cut or you don't. It's just that now if you don't play on the weekend there's a chance you can make some money. For all that people are complaining imagine if they had made the rule such that the other guys didn't get any money. Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

There is definitely something wrong with the communications between the tour and the players for stuff like this to happen. I wonder if it is the tour that doesn't communicate well, the players just don't listen or a little of both.

Well the first person they talked to who was surprised was John Daly. My money is on JD not paying attention to what comes out of the Player's policy board.

Might help us if the tour posted an explanation of the rule (how and why it's applied) on their website...

I'm not the tour, but here's the explanation.
The normal cut line is top 70 put ties.
However, if more than 78 player make the cut using that formula then the cut changes to be the number of players which is closest to 70.
As an example, if 79 players would have made the cut at par but only 58 at are -1 or better, then 79 would play on the weekend. However if only 64 players were at -1 or better then only 64 would play on the weekend. Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!
