In a stipulated 18 hole match, what is the worst defeat that a golfer could suffer?

How is a disqualification on the first hole recorded?
Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

Here's my scenario for the worst defeat that a golfer could suffer. Actually, it involves both competitors. Both players in a match are DQ'd before they even tee off on the first hole. They are overheard by an official agreeing to exclude the operation of a rule, or to waive any penalties to be incurred during the match. Under Rule 1-3, both could be summarily disqualified. Now that would be embarrassing. For more grounds for a DQ in match play, have a look at Rule 31-7.

Do you want the answer before or after the new rules come into effect??? It will make a difference.

Are there any rules that can cost you more than one lost hole in matchplay? A penalty that costs two lost holes if made on the 9th hole could mean a 10&9 result, which is worse/over earlier than 10&8.

Now that I think about it, I guess that's still 10&8, it just means you didn't get to the 10th.

Im too tired to think straight , but without delving deeper into my scratchy memories of the rules , Id guess if your 9up playing the 10th , and you discover your opponent has 15 clubs in his bag , you might just win 12/8

Point taken about "disqualification" not equating a loss at your opponents hands. However, in my mind, a defeat is a defeat.

As they say in elementary math class: You must show your work, not just an answer.
Can you explain?

I wiped the course with Ian Poulter's hide at Turnberry 10 & 8 today at lunch... but it was on the xbox 360.

Wouldn't a forfeit of a hole due to penalty count as a hole played? If someone incurs a 'two holes lost' penalty on the first hole, don't you then move to the third?

No. Rule 4-4. If a player carries 15 clubs for two holes he is penalised 2 holes. So if his opponent won the first two he is now 4 up with 16 to play.
If he carried them for 5 holes before it was discovered and his opponent was 5 up. The opponent is now 7 up with 13 to play
PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 4-4a or b,
REGARDLESS OF NUMBER OF EXCESS CLUBS CARRIED:
Match play ;— At the conclusion of the hole at which the breach is discovered, the state of the match is adjusted by deducting one hole for each hole at which a breach occurred. Maximum deduction per round: Two holes.

Another clue???
You are only allowed to have one of these.
If the answer is 15 & 13, then 5 holes were won "normally" and there would then be 10 penalty holes.
Get thinking.

So philosophically speaking, is it possible to have won more holes than you have actually played? Hmmm I wonder....

ya cant count COC , its like chucking in local rules at the last minute lol
but your right , there are a few , 1 ball rule , caddie breaches and transportation
would be pretty damn amazing to discover all the breaches on like the 10th hole ...but hey , weird things happen on the golf course
so we might be looking at 18/8 or worse maybe

???
My opponent wins the first two holes. He is up 2. I then win the next 9. I am now up 7 holes with 7 to play(dormie). We then discover that he has an extra club. The maximum penalty is loss of the two holes he has won. I am then up 9 with 7 to play.
I believe that is the maxiumum in this scenario. However if I will the first ten holes he is beaten even worse 10 and 8. Even if we discover that he has an extra club after the 10 th hole he can not be penalized any since he has won no holes to be penalized. The worst I think is 10 and 8. Help me to know if this is right?

how about if you are tied 9-9, AS after 18 holes and then realize he has an extra club... didn't you just win 18-0?

Sorry but the maximum penalty is TWO holes no matter how many holes he has won.

per club?? or 2 holes period? If that is the case why not use 40 clubs and spot your FC 2 holes

One, hypothetical situation.
You win the first and second holes. On the way to the third tee it was discovered that:
1. My wife pushed my cart down #1 & #2 while my friend Gerry carried my driver and helped me with club selection on the first and second fairways. You brought this to my attention after holing out on the second green.
2. I have 15 clubs in my bag.
3. On the 1st hole I played a Titleist and on the 2nd I played a Bridgestone, when the "one ball" rule was a condition of competition.
4. I hopped a ride in a power cart going from #1 to #2 and from #2 to #3 when the condition of competition was that all players had to walk.
Penalties:
Third Tee
1. Two hole are added to your already 2 up. 4 up
2. Two holes are added to your 4 up. 6 up
3. Two holes are added to your 6 up. 8 up
4. Two holes are added to your already 8 up. 10 & 15. Match is over.
Hypothetical #2.
All the breaches are discovered on the 10th tee, after you have won the first 9 holes:
Penalties: 8 holes will be added to your existing total so the match is over 17 & 9, if all the penalties are added on simultaneously. But, if the penalties are added one breach at a time, then when the two hole penalty is added for having two caddies, the match is over 11 and 9.
Now, I want "AAA" and Gerry to chime in here with their, "but, but but..."

Rules are rules
The rules say maximum penalty is 2 holes lost. If he has not won any he can not be penalized any. He can only lose what he has won.
