Laptops - Where are the best deals?

I'm looking at dell.ca, futureshop, bestbuy anywhere.

Basically I need 1 or 2G of ram, and a moderate processor. No crazy video card.

I'm looking for a laptop to bring with me as a portable workstation - no games.

I've seen some good deals but if you know of anywhere with a great deal please let me know. I already have computers but want a new one so I"m trying to figure out what is best for me instead of just rushing in and regretting. (Been there done that).

    Thanks in advance,

If you like Dell notebooks, take a look at DFSdirect.ca as they have "Open-Box" and "Off-Lease" systems complete with balance of original warranty. All the systems are different, so you can start at the lowest price and start working until you find a combo you like. It shows the Original purchase price as well so you can see the potential savings, but I'd take that with a grain of salt as Dell often has promotions where they give upgrades on ram and HD's.

Sometimes you can find systems with warranties of almost 3 years. Anyway, it's just another place to take a look at.

I got a great one off of Used Ottawa dude, sometimes people buy a new one every year and sell the old ones.

Bought my first Apple in July '06 - MacBook Pro. 16 months later and not a single problem with this unit. Build quality is outstanding. All my previous laptops - Toshiba, IBM Thinkpads, Dells - all showed considerable wear or broke in some way after a year.

If you don't want to give up Windows, you can dual boot Windows and Mac OS with any of the new Macs.

    Thanks everyone,

I have an IBM now which has just started to die. I've had it for 4 yeras and it's been through HELL and back.

My sister bought dad a Dell w/ Vista... Nothing but problems since they bought it and he just checks email... Maybe it's vista maybe it's dell not sure.

Mac's. Heard lots of good things I am just a PC guy I know you can dual boot but I'm spending 2X the price and I've been using PC's for over 2 decades .

The hunt continues anyone have any experinces with Dell good or bad?

I've had no issues with my Dell desktop, but I've used Toshiba laptops exclusively for the last 10 years or so at work, I've NEVER had a problem with my trusty Toshiba

I'm typing this on a 3 year old Dell laptop. I've only ever had Dells and haven't had any issues.

The wife / family laptop is also a Dell and is either 5 or 6 years old now.

Are you running Vista jvincent? I guess I could ask for XP. Vista seems to be all the problems. Also I guess it's like anything when I was buying a car I asked people opinions and sure enough on almost every decent car some swore by it some swore at it!

XP SP2. It's on all three computers in the house with no real issues.

Depending on when the next computer purchase happens at our house it is highly likely that it will have XP on it as well.

Do it quick or keep a copy of XP available as it will not be available for consumer purchase soon I heard.

Not to worry. I have my original XP disks and since the next computer is likely to be a replacement I should be able to reactivate without any problems.

Many commercial customers are resisting the move to Vista.... it just doesn't work well at all. All of our new equipment coming in has Vista installed on it but we 'downgrade' it to XP during the cpu swap.... Vista doesn't work with many things yet, including some products that are sold by some of their high profile business partners

I believe you will see WindowsXP Professional around for a while yet.
