    marking ball with putter

I think this was asked before but I couldn't find using the search.

Can a player use his putter head to mark his ball?
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

Yes, this is actually a decision, rather than a rule.

20-1/12 Marking Position of Ball with Toe of Club
    Q. A player, prior to lifting his ball under a Rule, marked the position of the ball by placing the toe of a club at the side of, or behind, the ball. Is this permissible?

    A. Yes.

...as with all decisions, best to have a rules official interpret decisions for you. Gary will clarify.

Rule 20-1 requires that the position of the ball be marked before it is lifted under a Rule which requires it to be replaced.

It does not specify which objects may be used but suggests a ball-marker, a small coin or other similar object.

The above decision clarifies that the toe of a putter is sufficient to adequately mark the position of the ball.

(The PGA Tour hardcard prohibits the use of wooden tees to mark the position of the ball.)
