LCBO Food and Drink - Holiday Issue
Seriously, this annually is the best free publication you can get. Not to channel my inner Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray, but the recipes are awesome! Not to mention the drink recipes, the gift ideas. Awesome!!!!

on a related note, does anybody have a recipe for a really good hot buttered rum? (or similarly delicious warm alcoholic beverage)?

Not hot buttered rum, but I have a recipe for the best Egg Nog you will ever try, period. Once you try it you will never be able to go back to the "plastic nog" that they sell at Loblaws.

I don't think there's a single drink that I enjoy less than egg nog, to be honest.

That's because you've never had REAL egg nog.
Mine is derived from a recipe I found in a 1940's bar book. Every time I hand it out, it comes back with rave reviews. Enjoy.
8 XL Eggs (Wash the outsides in soapy water before starting)
1 Liter of half and half
3 cups of sugar
2 Tbsp vanilla extract
1 cup rum
1/2 cup amaretto
1/2 cup single malt scotch
Beat the eggs in a big bowl until frothy. Add the rest in whatever order you feel like and blend until mixed.
It's important to use good liquor. Cheap booze kills it.
Add ground nutmeg / cinnamon as a garnish after serving if you like. Not fat anymore. Need to get better at golf now!

Sounds pretty good. I'll have to try it with my folks liquor at christmas. Just curious: why wash the outside of the eggs?

That's there to satisfy the salmonella paranoid out there. The bacteria can be present on the outside of an eggshell and since the egg nog is "raw" some people get worried. Of course there is enough liquor in it to kill pretty much anything.

There's a recipe for rum totty (?) in the Food and Drink. You gonna get one, or do you want me to write it out here? Looks tasty! I love hot rum drinks.

They don't seem to have an online version. And there's no LCBO out here. Judging by all the booze-hounds on this board, I doubt there will be any of those guides left by the 22nd of December. So, if you could reach down into that kind heart of yours and post it, i would be eternally grateful.

Okay, here it is...
The Kentucky Hot Toddy
4 oz apple cider
1 oz bourbon
1 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice (or real lemon)
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
Heat all ingredients, then pour into a heatproof glass or mug. Garnish with lemon or a cinnamon stick.Donny Vantage NFL Guru, since 1974

Remember the scene in Rocky where he makes the raw egg shake? My egg nog is pretty close to that, except for the booze, sugar, and cream so it must be good for you.
