He would have to, and a fairly significant one at that I think. I would give him 4 million.

Redden really, really wants to stay here... money be damned.
The team clearly doesn't want him anymore and others will pay more, but he still desperately seems to want to stay in Ottawa. I cannot help but think there is another major reason other than hockey that is not being made public

see it all depends what he means by "pay cut"... does he mean from the 6.5million he is currently making, or a pay cut from what he will be woth next year.
I think they can still afford to keep him next year. They have Redden, Kelly, Donovan, Robitaille and Luke Richardson as UFA's as well as Eaves, Vermette, McGrattan, and Meszaros as RFA's.
You would expect Kelly, Eaves, Vermette and Meszaros to get raises and McGrattan to stay similar. The other guys are expendable i would think.
Its not gonna be easy for Murray and they are gonna have to do something with Gerber, hopefully move the contract for a rental player who will be a UFA next year.

I'm not as keen as I once was to see Gerber traded out of town......he's been SOLID and Ray doesn't look like himself yet

it's wade's choice. Someone will offer him $6-7M to play elsewhere on a longterm contract. If he wants to get a big pay day, he is in line. I think the Sens might give him $3-4M and perhaps not as long a term. Really you can't pay him more than Phillips. Even Volchenkov at 2.5M is a bargain.
The Sens have to sign Kelly and Vermette who in my opinion, are more critical to the teams long term success. These guys are the glue that holds the team together and key to the PK.I got a fever. And the only prescription is more golf equipment.

After this year he will have made 33 million from the Sens......he's made his money, so if he wants a legitimate chance for the cup he's going to have to settle for less.
Contrary to popular belief, the proof is not in the pudding, rather it is in the EATING of the pudding - Redden isn't going to be able to have his pudding and eat it to he'll have to decide between maximizing his income or maximizing his chances for a ring

I would only be in favour of signing him for less money, if he can continue to show he no longer has "groin" problems. Otherwise you just don't know what you are going to get with him and any money spent on hium, would be money wasted.

I think Redden saying he'd be willing to take a pay cut to stay in Ottawa is a breath of fresh air. I am sick of players running off to other teams, usually the same teams time after time, chasing the all mighty buck. Look at Buffalo. Just when they reached a point where they were one of the top teams in the league, their top guys jump ship for more money else where. And Redden knows he can become a free agent and take his pick of big money offers from a dozen other teams. I just wish there were more players like him in the league.

I think you will see Vermette and Kelly signed. Personally, I would take them over Redden especially since you could sign both for the cost of Redden and I think they are more worthy of the cash and very valuable players. Both are excellent 2 way players with lots of speed and youth on their side.
I really like how all the pieces are starting to fit together on this team and they realize how good they have it.I got a fever. And the only prescription is more golf equipment.

But the real question is, do they have room in the cap to sign a near 40 year-old never-was with diminishing / non-existent skills, shys away from physical contact, looks good in the uniform kind of player who is willing to play for league minimum - ie, me?
