I don't get it. We have a successfully PGA Tour player who has chosen to become a Canadian resident, and we beat him up because he still has a love for his home country of Trinidad and Tobago, or because he has a unique smile. I would prefer to simply say "Thanks for making Canada your home." And contrary to some on this site, I don't find his candour off-putting at all. Were that a character flaw, many visitors to this site would be in need of some serious help.

My brother taught his kids in Calgary and Ames came in and did Career Day. He's trying to be a good Canadian, even raising his kids here.

So why do you like Weir so much or should I say why are you so proud of him? To my knowledge he does not live here. He does not pay taxes here. His kids are growing in a different culture. ????? He has roots here but besides that and endorsements he is pretty much an American to me.

Because he grew up here, learned his first steps in golf here, played and won at the junior level in CDN. That’s what makes me proud.

Him living in the States is no different then Mario Lemieux, Gretz, Lecavalier….I’m still proud when they play and win for there country in tourneys like the World cup.

Very interesting comments here I can't help but wonder if some of the responses against Stephen Ames are more related to responders not liking him as a person.........let me ask a related question. When Ben Johnson won his Gold medal in the Olympics did you feel a sense of national pride?

I hope that you didn't because Ben is the same as Stephen Ames in terms of being born outside of Canada but later adopting Canada as their home country and becoming a citizen.

Don't forget about Daniel Igali, Donovan Bailey, Alex Baumann, and Lennox Lewis.........all Canadian Athletes that immigrated to Canada and have won for us....
