How many golf balls would fit in a garbage can?

The green ones everyone puts out on the curb on garbage day... How many golf balls would fit in one of those? I have so many golf balls sitting around my place in boxes, bags, egg cartons. I was thinking of just dumping them all into a big garbage can and leaving them in the basement. Grabbing a few whenever I needed them. The lid has to close over the balls. Post your guesses and when I actually do it I'll tell you how many dozen I was able to stuff in there I'll post some pictures to document my fun day with all my golf balls LOL. Let the guessing begin!

well a Garbage can of 18 inches diameter x 24 inches deep = 3.6 cubic feet of volume. = 6220.8 cubic inches.

now if a golf ball is 1.68 inches in diameter

my best guess would have to be 3702 golf balls would fit in a STD garbage can. but it all depends on the mesurements of the one you're using.

But you assumed a perfect packing efficiency, which would not actually be the case. I'd say somewhere on the order of 10% less than the number you gave.

now sure how you got that JP. 1.68 inch diameter means 0.84 inch radius

volume=4/3¶r3

that gives us 2.48 for our volume which leaves us with about 2500 balls. That assumes 100% packing which is not possible. I would say about 20% loss to empty space between balls and balls not being stacked in such a way to minimize space wasted... brings us closer to 2000 balls.

sorry I don't know what brand of garbage can I have it home. Its your standard size green one with the handles on the side.... and a handle on the lid. Its plastic, green... same one as pretty much everyone owns
