    Presidents' Cup: Inside The Ropes

During the third round on Saturday, I had the privilege of supplying yardages for Mark Rolfing along with a friend of mine who does this gig for NBC, CBS, and TSN. In my group was Phil, Austin, Goosen, and Scott.
It is amazing the difference inside the rops walking with these guys. Apart from the odd comment, it is all business and quiet talk with their caddies. Here are some observations.

    Shotmaking
All of them hit the ball very solidly with their irons with Scott being the longest. To wit, a 243 3-iron on the par five 12th hole. Phil was the longest with the driver.

    Putting
None of them putted particularly well but Scott stood out as being very uncomfortable on the greens. His stroke and roll lacked any real authority.

    Errata
When you walk inside the ropes the crowd becomes a wall of faces that is quite easy to ignore. I spoke to a number of people on the way around who were really enjoying the event. On the 18th hole, I found myself in a two minute chat with Captain Nicklaus as he wondered what happened to Goosen's ball(wet!). We spoke about his general health and the MacGregor company. He had not heard about them dropping their Tour contracts for next year.
Phil M. walked over, promised Jack a birdie and delivered.
I had a fabulous time and will be working Can. Open next year.

I did an "Inside the ropes" gig as a photographer at the Canadian Open at Royal Montreal in 1997. I must say that outside the ropes is a very different experience. It was impossible at times last Sunday to not think about how different it is. Congrats on scoring a great gig!
