    Putting thread

When putting around this neck of the woods do you bother?

1)read the direction of the grain(can you actually see if the green is shiny or dark?)
    2)see where the sun sets
    3)take wind under consideration
    4)allow for cross grain
    5) etc etc etc

    3) well ... ummm ... nope
    4) nope
    5) nope, nope, nope,

    Distance and line only.

To go through all that at the course I play the most would be drive me insane ... one of my playing partners talks about all that but I think he is just looking for excuses.
    Back at it.

Strong winds affect the line apparently.

    1) If I can see the grain, I allow for it (firmer into the grain, lighter down grain) if I can't see it it isn't strong enough to adjust. Greens at Manderley have a pretty mild grain. At the Royal Ottawa the grain is very pronounced.

    2) no

    3) Only when the wind is really strong.

    4) See above. A cross grain will add or subtract break. No break, no worries about a cross grain putt.

    5) I find it really helps to consider the gravitational pull of the moon.

    1. Yes, especially this time of year when they let the grass grow longer.
    2. Yes.
    3. Not unless it is really blowing.
    4. Yes.
    5. That's usually what I mumble as I still misread a putt after all of the above!

Gee, that's NOT what I mumble (swear) after I misread a putt Oh, and no to the others. I check the line and pray.

    Yes, No, Absolutely, Yes.

I check for break from each side of the hole and use the read where the sun is at my back. I line up my putter from down the line until I feel comfortable, setup and and stroke it, NEVER thinking about weight. That I leave to my subconscious 'cause he's a much better putter than me. Elapsed time: 20 to 25 seconds for the 1st putt.

    1) If I can see it yes.
    2) Not really.
    3) If it's breezy enough.
    4) Yes.

I don't like to spend a lot of time reading or lining up putts. I play for fun and the worst thing in the world is waiting to hit your second shot from the fairway when 4 guys are taking forever on the green in front of you.

If it were a tournament or Intersectionals then take your time. If not, quick reads are all that's necessary.
