    Dany Heatley

    It's Now Official!

Heatley agrees to 6-year deal with Sens
    Dany Heatley

    10/3/2007 5:22:30 PM

Sources tell TSN Dany Heatley has agreed to a 6-year contract extension with the Ottawa Senators believed to average between $7.5 and $8 million per year.

Although details of the structure remain confidential, sources say it's similar to the contract Daniel Briere signed in Philadelphia in terms of a heavily weighted salary at the front of the contract that ratchets downward, making the cap hit the team will absorb more attractive.

The on again – off again negotiation resumed this afternoon with the Senators tabling an offer that the two sides used as the base to avoid tonight's season opening deadline.

The Heatley camp made it clear if a deal wasn't reached before the start of the season, further contract talks wouldn't resume until the end of the year.

This is great news, but who goes now so the Sens can afford to sign Spezza?

2 goals, 1 Assist including the game tying and game winning goals for Heatley. Sweet first win for the Sens and a great game for Heatley.

Me thinks, it's a long term mistake. Spenza is the franchise player.

We'll get Spezza locked up, especially now that Alfie and Heatley are locked up - no worries. Spezza will get 6 million or so and we'll have no money left, and I mean no money if we do not get rid of Redden and Gerber ( although he looked ok last night).

I'm sure they can package Gerb and redden and get something back this year.

This is a great deal for ottawa. I was reading the paper a few days ago and they said, another 50 goal season this year and he will be the first player with 3 consec. 50 goal years since leclare in the mid 90s. If he did score 50, he would be able to sign a deal for 8.5-9mil a year as a free agent. This is a bargin price!!!

If spezza doesn't hurt his back again and stays healthy all season... he could finnish top 3 in the NHL in scoring. He is going to make atleast 6m next year anyway, that could go up a lot if he has a huge year!

I wonder where redden will end up.

i disagree, although i think Spezza is very important as well. I would take a scorer over a playmaker more times than not. Spezza is still young, and learning that he doesn't have to do the Harry Houdini pass everytime.

spezza is a one dimensional player, and allways will be. he is not defensive minded and that can not be taught. specially to a big headed pompous guy like him.

alfredson is the franchise right now, and his play will determine what happens to this team.

A one dimensional TALENTED player is not a bad thing for a team if they have him playing on a line with guys that can makeup for his short comings. Spezza is a big part of the team and I would love to see 2 things happen, lock him up in a long term contract and somehow get him to stop with the fancy behind the back passes

Those are the least of his worries. He needs to stop always trying to go cross ice with passes when there is 5 guys between him and his target. And he needs to stop just dumping the puck into the middle of the ice.

OK, let me rephrase what I said....

Teach the sucker how to make solid crisp quick passes to his own team mate!!

Could've done without the sucker, but better.

I don't understand why you guys constantly berate Spezza. Tied for second for total points last year with Alfie at 87. +- 19 and only 45 PIM's.

Trade him to San Jose, we'll send you Jeremy and a bag of pucks, maybe toss in a couple of sticks to top off the deal!

I love Spenza's surprising "behind the back" passes, and they often work. Imagine how good he would be on European ice with his creativity.

I'm sure his point totals would go up and points scored off his turn overs would go down if he stopped with the fancy passes and just used his head but even if he doesn't change any part of his game and stays where he is and plays the full season... he will be one of the top centres in the league this year. Probably behind Crosby and thorton

At least you are smart enough to realize that, and to put him behind Joe
Now, why are you online and not working?
Are you semi-retired already like me?

I do agree he needs to be a better puck passer, but you sure can't argue the fact he is a good player. As for being defensive, you bet that can be taught. If the coaching staff wants him to be more defensive they just have to lay down the law. A few missed shifts here and there and he'll soon get the hint. If in the past this has not happened then blame the coaching staff. I have seen that in JR hockey, players benched for not being smart in their own end, trust me they soon get the message.

    Joe who?!?

I am in total agreement about how being defensive can be taught.....perhaps the BEST example of this is Stevie Y. He went from being a 150 point a year pure offensive guy to one of the best two way centres of all time...........

none of them i feel were taiht, they were defenmsive players who excelled at being offensive. Yserman was ALWAYS defensvely aware, even if he did not play the defensive forward role, he was aware. Spezza is juist not awware, never has been. That has always been his drawback. is he a gfood player, of course, no one is saying he isn't, but i woudl not call him the franchise, he just isn't, he is one of the top scorers on the team, but not the franchise.
