World Rankings - What's up
How does this happen Mike Weir's World ranking stays at 6 this week.
Nothing against Jim Furyk but he moves up in the standings--from 5th to 4th--after placing 11 spots behind Weir at the PGA Championship. Doesn't it make sense that Weir should be ahead of him. Since Weir also has more event wins than Furyk this season (three to two). Craziness
Also strange, Davis Love stays at 3 even though he didn't even make the cut. Same thing w/ Retief Goosen who stays at 12. These rankings are just plain crazy.
What the heck is Rich Beem doing at 23rd spot although he has dropped from 18th.

This could be shaky so correct as needed.
The World golf rankings are based on a 2 year time period. You have to compare their records over the last 104 weeks.
Weir will have to win and place really well to keep his position as his good finishes from two years ago will be dropped from his ranking record and his poor year last year will have a negative or no impact.

World Rankings
The rankings are based on a 2 year cycle of performance, with slightly more weighting on the tournaments played in the last 13 week cycle. (the "what have you done for me lately" theory) Then each 13 week period after that your points that you earned lose value.
The reason Furyk moved up and Weir didn't is simply that Furyk has been more productive, on average, over the last 13 weeks even with the MC at the British (8 tournaments played, 2 wins including a major). Mr. Weir has played only 6 times in the same period and has performed well, but hasn't gained enough points to change his ranking. (his Masters win has fallen into the 14-26 week period so the win has lost value in the points multiplier)
Love and Goosen are consistent performers who finish consistently high in the money on a weekly basis, thats why there's no movement there, even with the occasional MC
Rich Beem, on the other hand, is hanging on by a thread. His 2nd place finish at the Western open is the only thing that has slowed his fall. Even though he plays a lot of events he MC's or finishes way down in the money. If he doesn't smarten up soon he'll drop like a stone.
The system is fine because it rewards consistency over an extended period. When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

Whether it "works" or not, it sure makes for some great grillroom debate.
