Lie and Ballflight/ Lie and Face Contact

Now I know the lie of your clubs can have an effect on your ballflight. Too upright and the ball goes left, too flat and the ball goes right.

But does lie affect where on the face of the iron you make contact? I have two sets in my possesion right now. One set I hit in the middle of the face or out towards the toe a bit. The other set, I hit more towards the heel and the odd hosel rocket. I haven't compared the lies of the equivalent clubs from each set yet, just wondering if anyone knows off hand.

    Thanks.

If it's hosel rocket time, maybe lend him the Slingshots. Sounds like he can use all the help he can get.

    Alright, no more wisecracks.

I'm actually quite intrigued to find out the answer to this. Can't explain it, but when I use the one set, my contact is nowhere near the heel area. But more often than not, with the other set contact is always dangerously close to el hosel.

Definatley not, I hit the "Quote" button to your reply. Check out my reply, that is all that you had posted at first, and if you didn't there's a glitch in the site that allows me to see your reply while you type it. But I doubt that's it.

But does the possible change in lie make you change your swing???? In turn that could result in the different face contact???

If you have the same shaft with the same flex in each club then I would say that lie angle would not be why you hit these two sets differently. If the shafts are different , however, you may be experiencing more toe droop in one than in the other in which case , you most definitely could be seeing a difference in the ball impact pattern.

you should never change your swing. it should be a constant.

you fix clubs to mold to that constant

    don

    Two different shafts.

    Set one: R300

Set two: Apollo r-flex (Humps I think)

I was going to give the same answer as Don. If the shafts were the same and you were still getting different impact then it could in theory be something visual throwing you off.

BTW, if they are hump shafts it should be pretty obvious.

I take it, the Humps have a hump? If that's the case, then they are not Humps, just a regualr Apollo shaft.

Yep. The "hump" is a big bump about 18" or so from the tip of the shaft.

Then definately not Humps. But I find it odd I have such different contact with two sets of irons. I don't get it.

    Don't underestimate toe-droop.

When I first put the SMT shafts in my driver this summer I hit almost everything thin for a week or so. Once I started to tee it higher I was much better off.

So all things being equal (ss, angle of attack, etc) toe-droop occurrs in the softer of the two shafts?

Yes. I think it's also more a function of tip stiffness vs butt stiffness.

Gotcha, the set with the Apollos definately feels softer when I swing them, but not one shot was anywhere near the heel. But at the turn yesterday I switched sets, and sure enough had a few close calls to the hosel and actually got one hosel rocket.

Lies which are too upright will cause more of a tendency to hit the ball off the toe. Lies which are too flat will cause a tendency to hit the ball more off the heel.
That could be your problem, although it is more likely the space between your ears
Would I be correct in guessing that the Acers are the ones you are hitting off the toe? They are 2* up from standard as they come from the factory. Plus I find with the extra heel grind they do seem to have a tendancy for toe hits. Play them for more than your usual one round before giving up on clubs and you will get over that very quickly LOL.

You'd have to switch shafts from one set to the other to really know for sure Could be so many things. Swingweight, face balance, centre of gravity and on and on. I would just get rid of the rocket set Is your putter force balanced John?

You are correct sir. Tis the Acers that I am hitting more in the centre and towards the toe. And I didn't give up on them, just wanted to try an experiment the other day.

Good mojo with the new putter today. I mis-read a few big breakers (Outaouais) but rolled it pretty well.

Not surprising. Although I love my XDS Pros I do find that when I miss it is usually a toe hit. If there is one thing you have to fight a bit with these clubs it is that. Could be the upright lies, the sole grinds or the long head. However I have had (as you know) many sets of XDS Pros with a variety of different shafts and they were all the same way. So too are Cally Pro Series and other low offset, upright-lie shovels. You really will get used to it, trust me. You will also find the toe hits lose little distance and tend to draw. Some of my best shots are toe hits ... just pretend that was what you planned all along...
