    Tapping Around Hole With Putter

I have noticed lately that the ball will turn right or left right at the hole, no reason for this except that the hole has not been set properly.

I have started to tap around the hole on all sides with my putter.

My golfing partner asked if that was legal and I said that I did not know as I know you cannot tap a line from the ball to the hole.

So for the experts here is it legal?

I am no rules expert... but I would imagine it is a big NO.

i am almost positive that you can't do this before you putt. However, after you have finished the hole, you are totally entitled to fix around the hole.

So if I putt out I can do it for the other person I am playing with? Can the other person in the group do it before I putt? Before or after he putts?

Tapping down the surface is reparing damage to the green. You may only repair old hole plugs or ballmarks on the green. 16-1c
Further, it would be improving the Line of Play

This is one rule that should be changed IMO....can't stand those stupid spike marks.
