Fat Shots with Wedges, Irons
Can any one help me with this. I hit my shots with an iron or a wedge and the divot starts before the ball, sometimes robbing me of a lot of distance. Not to mention my golf elbow.
This seems to come and go.I either have no divot or the bad kinda divot.
Is it hanging on to my weight transfer, not moving through fast enough?
Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks,

You may be increasing your spine angle on the downswing, thereby taking a big divot. The opposite will result in skulled shots if you straighten up (reducing your spine angle) on the downswing. Try to maintain the angle you had at address and all should be well.

We'd have to swing as it could be one of maaaany things.
1. It could be something as simple as keeping your eye on the ball a little longer.
2. Too much body movement on downswing or a dip in the left shoulder.

Try putting more weight on your front side and make sure that you set the club up to the ball with the handle pointing at your belt buckle, this should have your hands forward of the ball as well. A more upright swing and you should say goodbye to the fatties.

On all irons shots, one must hit down on the ball. This is easily accomplished by following the suggestion above that the weight be kept on the foot at address and left there. There is no need in the swing for a weight shift back. As you swing down into the ball your weight will shift forward without any conscious thought.
As PD suggested, you must keep the right wrist bent and the left wrist flat. Not doing this causes the fat/thin shots. Grip the club across the palm of your right/lower hand, creating a 3" gap between the butt of the club and the inside of the right forearm. Now, hit little shots maintaining the 3" gap. At first you will likely flip but persevere. Soon you will be hitting shots keeping the gap once you gain the strength and coordination. Then, just add the forward hand and hit shots, not losing the gap.
