A winning team was declared as my team was DQ'd from the playoff. We have been awarded 2nd place.

    Broke a rule, 7-1.b.

However, tournament director Karl Parks of Executive Golf, which runs the tournament, ruled late Wednesday night the McGowan/Schmidt team was disqualifed because one of the players played the course between the end of the regulation 18 holes and the playoff. "

"After doing our due diligence and consulting with the Royal Canadian Golf Association, we ruled there was a violation of rule 7-1.b. The penalty is disqualification," said Parks.

Originally, this was to have been a three-hole playoff. They were tied and got called because of darkness. Apparently, they were going to decide a mutually agreeable time to play a full 18 hole playoff.

Here's my question... If the four of them decided to play on Saturday at Cloverdale, can any of the participants play the course beforehand? Would that be considered practise...

Oh, and a congrats to Matt/Paul who finished in third place!!
    Cheers,

    7-1. Before or Between Rounds
    a. Match Play
On any day of a match-play competition, a player may practice on the competition course before a round.
    b. Stroke Play
Before a round or play-off on any day of a stroke-play competition, a competitor must not practice on the competition course or test the surface of any putting green on the course by rolling a ball or roughening or scraping the surface.

When two or more rounds of a stroke-play competition are to be played over consecutive days, a competitor must not practice between those rounds on any competition course remaining to be played, or test the surface of any putting green on such course by rolling a ball or roughening or scraping the surface.

Exception: Practice putting or chipping on or near the first teeing ground before starting a round or play-off is permitted.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 7-1b: Disqualification.

Note: The Committee may, in the conditions of a competition (Rule 33-1), prohibit practice on the competition course on any day of a match-play competition or permit practice on the competition course or part of the course (Rule 33-2c) on any day of or between rounds of a stroke-play competition.

So to answer your question, you cannot practice (or play any shots) on the tournament course on any day of a tournament, this includes before rounds, between rounds and while awaiting a playoff.

A costly mistake but an honest one.

That seems a smidgeon harsh to me, and like something I'd have done for sure. Sorry it had to happen to you.

Well, the RCGA rules were in force so there was no getting around the infraction. We are guilty as charged. The committee exercised discretion in only applying the DQ to the playoff.

It was a very exciting playoff for sure. My partner and I both blew 6 footers for the win on the first hole and then things got interesting. I missed a 15 footer for birdie by 1 mm, then our opponents missed by an even slimmer margin. On the 3rd hole (par 5), they had a 15 footer for eagle and we had a 10 footer for birdie. They lipped out! My partner (who hadn't made a putt all day) feathered one in for the tie.

Too bad we couldn't play the 18 hole playoff....
