What the heck is wrong with the oilers?!?!?!

The Edmonton Oilers have struck again, this time sending an offer sheet to Ducks' restricted free agent Dustin Penner. The tendering offer is a five-year, $21.25 million deal that Anaheim has 7 days to match. "We're going to wait and see what happens here in the next seven days before we make a comment," said Penner's agent Gerry Johannson. The Ducks' salary cap is around the $48 million mark and with Penner's new deal it would put the team over the $50.3-million ceiling. Stay tuned to this interesting situation. Oh man, burke is going to be P.O.'d!! First Vanek and now this??

i think its a much better move than the Vanek offer sheet. Lowe knows that the Ducks are near the cap, although chances are Neidemyer is retiring, which is about 5million i believe. But the Ducks actual cap by the owner was about 42million, which makes Penner a tough match. Lowe used the restricted free agent offer sheet to perfection i believe. He picked a player that he believed is worth the money, and from a team that is up against the cap.

You know there is going to be payback when Robby Schremp and Andy Cogliano come up for RFA in a few years, GM's have a good memory.

You can't only blame the GMs sending the offer. The player (and his agent) has to accept the offer as well.

He'd have to be completely out of his mind not to accept the offer. He made $450,000 last season, and would make $4.5 million with this new contract. That's a HUGE change. I don't think Burke would have signed him for more than $1.5 mil/season. We'll see if he matches the offer or not.
