The Big Dog is Full... Now how far do the Pups go?

So we've got another thread showing how far the driver goes, but I'd kind of like to get a feel on other yardages. The driver can be rather subjective because of doglegs and line of sight issues when measuring, but generally you'll be hitting irons from distances measured to the pin.

So lets put it out there, calm day with no elevation change, and normal full yardage swing, how far do you hit the Pitching Wedge and how far do you hit the 5 iron (or equivalent hybrid for those who've moved on from the longer irons)?

For myself, I don't usually pull out the pitching wedge pitching wedge past 155 yards (under conditions stated above), and I'll usually grab my 5 irons for shots between 200 and 210 yards.

I find that people can keep up to me with the driver and some people even put it past me from time to time, but with my irons that kind of changes.

If it matters, I'm a 4.6 index right now I think.

I de-loft my irons and wedges quite a bit, so I get a little more distance with them than my buddies that are of equal skill level when it comes to scoring as I am.

I was using my 52 degree for up to 125 yards last week with a full swing. I'm not sure if that's a "normal" distance for that club for me because I just picked up a new one, but I don't have a distance for my PW since I barely ever use it.

I don't have a distance for my 5-iron either, but if I was to guess, I'd say somewhere between 205 to 215? I guessed in reference to which club I play on the par 3 16th that's 240 yards. I take a 4-iron there and usually land it on the front of the green which is 37 yards from front to back. I'd say that's a carry of about 225 or so and I figure my 5-iron is about a 10 yard gap from my 4.

I have really weird yardages on my irons. Generally…

    Lob wedge 115
    Sand wedge 130
    Pitching wedge 148
    9 iron 158
    8 iron 167
    7 iron 175
    6 iron 185
    5 iron 187
4 iron (for chipping out of trees only)
    3 iron (same as above)

I have "hot" irons and a hard golf ball and I close the face of the club a little and play a pronouned draw.
At times I can hit my short irons crazy distances when my timing is good.

Wow...That's an odd spread. Do you have a different swing for each? I would have thought someone who hits their PW 135 would hit their 5-iron close to 200 yards.

By "hard" do you mean overswing? Not trying to put you through the grind here, but I have the same swing for all my irons. I've never seen anyone change their swing speed throughout their set. Do you not swing "hard" for a particular reason?

Ok....but for what reason do you "back off" the long irons?

For the record, there's nothing wrong with it, but I'm still curious.

It's not often you can back off on a club and hit it soundly every time.

By all means, keep doing whatever works for you. You must have a huge distance gap at the top of your set though if you only hit your 5-iron 180 yards. Is that accurate?

I mean you hit your 5-iron 180, so lets say you have a 10 yard gap between the long irons which might be a stretch. That means your longest iron is 200 yards if you carry a 3-iron. You must have a 40 or 50 yard gap in there if you carry a 5-wood. Judging by your 135 PW, you would probably hit your 5-wood about 240, 250?

i hit my irons pretty long by comparison to my driver. i play with guys who hit it past me, but i still have the same or less club as them on iron shots.

I normally hit my pitching between 135-150 yards depending on the type of shot im play and whether im delofting the club face or not. As for my 5 iron when im hitting it solid it goes about 210 with basically all carry and very minimal role.

That's odd for sure. What is the loft of your PW and 3-wood?

Am I the only one that finds only a 100 yard gap between a PW and 3-wood odd?

Considering he said he hits his driver 260ish, not really. Everything seems to go up by 10 yds, which is the average I see in many players. All good on my end.

He said he hits his driver between 240-260. He hits his PW 135. Does that not sound odd? I would figure 140 or 150 yard gap between your PW and your driver would be the norm? With those numbers we're talking 105 yards gap on his 240 drive to a 135 yard PW.

If we assume his driver is 10.5, and his PW is say 46 degrees, that's something like 2 yards per degree. Is that normal? Just seems odd to me. 135 yards is a pretty decent PW. Maybe it just looks funny when you compare it like this...

If we used that calculation for my driver distance to my PW, I should be hitting my PW 200 yards! HAHAH!

Odd? Perhaps, but does it really matter? It gets him around the course well enough for him. Personally I'd like to have the tight yardages between clubs that Jarred has. I know I have some gaps in mine, although I haven't measured exactly how far I hit each club.

Depending on the brand of irons you are using your PW could be a 9I. Callaway have been known to be half a club or more stronger then other companies. The other thing is tempo. High handicappers will over swing their irons. Most good low cappers will hit their scoring wedges smoothly for accuracy and not full out.
