    Question Short Teeing Area

    Hi Gary,

I played at my father's course on the weekend, and played a few short/shallow teeing areas.

What I mean is that from the fronts of the Tee markers, then 2 club lengths back went off of the short grass.

Is there supposed to be a minimum depth to the teeing area, i.e. maybe 1 club length?

Playing Stone Bridge a few times, the East course hole 6, par 3, I remember the tee markers were so far back that it was almost 1/2 a club length to the end of the short stuff.

Is this a "Play the course as it lies" thing, or is this some type of "Illegal configuration"?

    Thanks.
    Happy

The “teeing ground’’ is the starting place for the hole to be played. It is a rectangular area two club-lengths in depth, the front and the sides of which are defined by the outside limits of two tee-markers. A ball is outside the teeing ground when all of it lies outside the teeing ground.

There is nothing in the Rules requiring the teeing ground to be "in the short grass", but it is common practice.

Placing the back tee-markers within two club lengths of the end of the teeing area is either an oversight or just carelessness.

It wouldn't hurt to mention the problem to someone in the pro shop.
