Slow Play

Any suggestions on how to cope with slow play? I was playing this weekend with delay after delay. Each swing felt like my first of the day after waiting between shots for so long. Long story short, I became rattled very early on and the round was a mess.
It's not like I would have had a brilliant round otherwise but at least I could have played to my potential. Any tips on finding one's "happy place"?

Play early in the morning and normally you avoid the slower later day rounds. I get out between 7:30 and 8:00 and never have a problem.

Join clublink, they take slow play seriously, all day long. It is nice knowing that you can count on your round taking 4 to 4:30 everytime.

Just ask mjf, the marshall claimed we were 4 minutes behind at the turn (I think he was wrong), as we finished in just over 4 hrs.

Exactly, and this also keeps your wife or girlfriend happy

However it does not address the issue of slow play. Then again this issue has been talked to death and it still continues.

The problem I see is too many "PGA WANNA BE'S" on the golf courses. Looking at a 6 foot putt from 20 different angles and then they still miss it by two feet! Or people not playing ready golf. Just get to your ball and be ready to hit it when your time comes.

You can beat this slow play issue until you are blue in the face, but things are not going to change until courses start booting slow players off the course in the middle of their rounds. No refunds either. But that will not happen anytime soon as they will lose revenue, so they think. However once golfers learn that a certain course does not tolerate slow play they will frequent that course more often. So in the long run the revenue might actually go up.

I agree! That's one of the great things I like about CL, no slow play. I have finished most of my rounds in less than 4hrs, its been great. No more 4.5-5hrs rounds anymore, even in the afternoon.

I have the same problem when I have to wait for a long time. Instead of sitting down, I will usually take out my club and make practice swings on the tee. That way, it kinda feels like I'm still inthe zone. Also, try and not think of how slow the round is going so you don't get frustrated and ruin your game.

Do you use a cart? I find the cart guys whine about slow play more often than the walkers because they are, literally, sitting around most of the time. Try walking.

Look around, enjoy the scenery and enjoy your day on the course. Nothing you can do about the slow play so might as well just enjoy…

That’s true. During intersectial qualifiers at HP this weekend, the slowest group played in 4h35m. We played in 4h19m. Great time for a competition round…

Slow play is good. It allows for rest and the enjoyment of nature.

Prevention is the key... yet, once you're stuck behind a slow group...

1) Mentioned to Marshall.
2) See if they let you pass.
3) See if you can skip a hole or arrange with Marshall (jump two or three and then come back) - ask for rain check if not possible--
4) If you don't have such options then play 2-3 balls (but keep the pace behind your slow group)

5) If whole course is packed... then make a note to not come back to the same track. (No.1 reason that I don't play during weekends at some courses)

ps: If a game is 4.5 that's a long one.. I play most of my round under 4 hours (public courses)
