Relief, one club length
Yesterday, Berhard Langer drives his ball right of the fairway and into mud caused by the gallery walking through. He is awarded a drop to the nearest point of relief of course using a club length. He pulls out his very long putter to do this an ddrops his ball.
I was under the impression that you had to use the club you were going to hit the shot with. I have seen many use the driver but this putter is a new one. I guess it is his longest club.
What is up with that??Lefty Lucas

You are allowed to use any club in your bag to measure the one club length.
Where it gets a little confusing is that you determine whether you need relief based on the club you are going to use to make your stroke. This is covered under the exception to 25-1.
For example, if you are 100 yards from the green and with a wedge there is no interference with your swing but if you used a driver you would be standing on a drain then you cannot get relief because it isn't reasonable to make that shot. This particular rule gets a lot of discussion.

Too bad, I would have liked to see him hit his putter to the green.
