I'm hoping that I can convince a few public members to play my home course (save a few $$) ... I'd even be willing to chip in a few $$ if it's more expensive than a track they want to play at ... but of course i understand that there's an edge associated w/ home course advantage, and hope nobody feels obliged to play with anyone @ their homecourse just because it does save them $$.

my experience with these matches is that most people are accomodating and reasonable in order to pick a time, course, location, tees, price, etc. There's some give and take. I'm playing an NCGT match this evening at Pineview, probably not my favourite course but it happens to work for both of us in terms of schedule location and price.

Now, that being said, any Hunt Club, Royal Ottawa, Camelot or Rivermead members that want to play their match against me at their home course, I would gladly accept.

I think the caps should be set based on the course and not just a difference in the index.

Just to clarify for others.

The handicaps used for determining strokes are the "Course Handicaps" which are specific to the course/tee and are based on you Handicap Factor.

The following link will convert your Handicap Factor into a course handicap. The math is the same for the USGA and RCGA even though one uses "index" and the other uses "factor".

Wouldn't setting a 6000 yard minimum rule be a disadvantage to a short ball hitter such as myself? Why don't we just set a minimum slope and rating and go with that. That way both parties (long ballers and short hitters) have an equal chance.

6000 yds is pretty much the standard for white tees, at least in and around there give or take a few yards. I think most people can come to an agreement as to the course and what tees to play from. I doubt this will be a big problem....

I agree with you though Lance. Definitely an advantage if someone plays the course every day...heck I can barely beat my dad on his course, despite walloping him everywhere else.

Playing from different tees is really easy to calculate the handicaps. It may even help pick a course, for example a short hitter preferring to play the whites rather than the blues. You know how to calculate the player's course handicap using the link above, all you need to do is add the difference in the course ratings.

For example, Player A wants to play from the whites which gives him a course handicap of 15. Player B wants to play from the blues and this gives him a course handicap of 13 (Player B has a better index to start with). The whites are rated at 69.3 while the blues are rated at 71.5, a difference of 2 strokes. Player B adds in the two strokes resulting in a handicap for the match of 15, and no strokes given for this match.

Just a thought.

Colby, that's not the correct way to apply handicap strokes. The course rating does not come into play at all. Only the course handicap, which is based off the slope, is used to determine strokes.

As an example if by playing from different tee boxes the course handicaps for the two players worked out to the be same, no strokes would be given even though the course ratings are different.

The course slope and your index determines your course handicap. The differences in the course rating is applied if you want to play different tees.

From the RCGA Handicap Manual:

3-5. Players Competing from Different Tees or Men and Women from same
Tees
a. Different Tees: Men vs. Men; Women vs. Women; Women vs. Men

Different tees usually have different Ratings . Because an

reflects the probable score of a

scratch golfer, the higher-rated course is more

difficult, and the player playing from the set of tees with the higher RCGA Course
Rating receives additional stroke(s) equal to the difference between each RCGA
Course Rating, with .5 or greater rounded upward . The additional stroke(s) are

When I bought mine, it was still just HTML, and I needed it as a member of the handicap commitee at my club.
