wine kits
I can't afford to keep buyin 11 dollar bottles of wine....its just way to pricey. I'm going to go the kit route. I was wondering if anybody has any recommendations/warnings about what to avoid. The place that does it near my house uses "winexpert" brand kits. I'm generally a red wine kind of guy, usually a merlot or shiraz, but am not that particular. Basically, I'm planning on getting one of the 5 week varieties (they're cheaper and ready sooner ), but don't want to do so if I'm going to be sacrificing too much quality. Any suggestions from personal experience?

Purchase a juice as opposed to a concentrate. They are pricier and take longer to age but well worth it as they taste much better. They will still only cost you $3-4 per bottle and, if you continue to make, you will always have wine at your disposal (FIFO).

LOL - Actually Moochie is right, the home-mades that are made from actual juice as opposed to the concentrates are drinkable.........I still prefer to have a nice $25-$35 store bought bottle to get things started after that the 'ol sence of taste has been dulled down some so it doesn't matter

haha...well, seeing as buying a twelve dollar bottle is splurging, i should be okay.

Seeing as you are probably not a huge "connosseur" i'd stick with the 4 week wine. Drinkable, and probably as good as the $8 bottles you'd find at the store.
But if you can afford it, i would suggest springing for one of the more expensive ones, and letting it age in your basement (after you bottle it) while you drink the cheap one. Theres no point in buying the 6 or 8 week wine if you plan on cracking the bottle as soon as you get home.

that's not a bad idea. I've gone for the 4 week variety for now, but starting on an eight week type half way though this batch would make some sense. I should be in earning mode by that point, anyway.
