Man-made obstructions
so i am just watching Tin Cup the movie with Kevin Costner, and you know that shot he hit off the pora-potty in the final round of the open... is that legal to use man made obstacles to your advantage?
yes i know its a somewhat stupid question, but it got me thinking...Last edited by MusicMan; 02-17-2007 at 11:14 PM.

I've seen something close to that done on tour.
The ball was close to a stone wall and the player couldn't take a "normal" swing (it wasn't the road hole) and there was no relief. The player ended up hitting the into the wall and having it ricochet towards the green.

I banked one off a shed to get back on the fairway after an errant tee shot @ Carleton about 10 years ago .. What a great sound that made (and yes, the shot worked )

Can't remember ... The shed was on the left side of a fairway that doglegged left, and my ball was right behind a tree so I aimed at the shed and popped her back out, and got the ball up the fairway about 50 extra yards
edit: just checked out their site...#7 looks a lot like the hole I remember.NCGT Ryder Cup Team Green (06,07,08)

There's nothing wrong with playing them off whatever you'd like, save your equipment, yourself and your caddie especially the latter, who, if big and burly, might object to being used to effect a carom shot. Over the years, I've intentionally played shots off buildings, sheds, a car and signs. For you of squeamish disposition, the car was an old clunker plastered with Bondo. The little dent that my ball caused was camouflaged by the pre-existing rust, dents, dings and holes.

Please make sure the porta potty isn't being used at the time of your carom shot, that is unless you can run really fast cause it's really loud inside of those things when it's hit by a golf ball. I've heard Eh-hem other people talk about others in foursomes waiting in prey for someone to use one of those facilities before unleasing a barrage of balls off of said facility.

The best par I've had would have to be on #14 (131 yd. par 3) at Mountain Creek. I pushed my shot hard right - it was going out of bounds. Fortunately, I hit the ball towards a big barn with an aluminum or tin roof.
The ball hit the roof just right and bounced onto the green about 12 feet from the hole. Missed the stupid birdie but had a tap-in par. Not bad considering I could easily have had a bad bounce on the barn (or could have missed it altogether) and be hitting 3 off the tee!!

i think the ruling is the same as a electrical wire or telephone wire you get a free drop from youre original shot ie like a mulligan even if it just bounces off of it it doesnt have to stop on it, you also cannot use it to youre advantage like bouncing a shot off if it touches the shot is dead and must be retaken this is only if the course establishes it as a rule, otherwise you are s+++ out of luck.
Proost!

No, there is a specific Local Rule that may be invoked by the committee relating to overhead power cables ONLY.
If you accidentally bounce of any other obstruction this is a true 'Rub of the Green' and you play the ball as it lies. The same action applies if you do it deliberately
Rub of the Green
A “rub of the green’’ occurs when a ball in motion is accidentally deflected or stopped by any outside agency (see Rule 19-1).
