Thread: Ottawa Citizen Tourney

Since I'm giving strong consideration to entering the Citizen tourney this year, I want to be clear on this... Would it be sufficient for me to generate my handicap index using an "RCGA certified" method such as the "Handicapping" facility provided by this site and then having the pro from my 'home' course attest to it? Note that I don't have a membership at this course... BTW: This is exactly what I did when I tried to enter the tournament a couple of years ago but my index wasn't low enough to make the cut.
It does seem kind of silly that anyone can pay $25 to join the GAO Public Player Program and then put in whatever scores they like without any oversight and, voila, they have an 'official' handicap. I presume that to get into the Citizen tournament, one would still require a pro to vouch for the GAO-generated handicap?

You don't have to be a member anywhere to enter the Citizen tournament, but you do need someone to certify your index be it a Pro, Hdcp Chair, Club Captain etc. That said a friend of mine had the Carleton golf coach certify his index (as a personal friend that is).
The GAO or QGA public player program is probably your best bet though.

I'm not sure what the Citizen will have for entry requirements this year.
The GAO public player program meets all the requirements for handicapping purposes, including the ability for others to see my posted scores. This still doesn't prevent somebody from sandbagging and the only real way to do that is to have a dedicated committee like BCMist describes.
For the Citizen true sandbagging is less of an issue since the HDCP is entry qualifier and the tournament is played as gross scores. Reverse sandbagging is still a problem for people trying to get in who wouldn't normally qualify.

I did mention one course earlier... final details have to be done before it is announced. But we can play the guessing game if you want! Think of the best tracks in town...

PEI just doesn't like Kanata.

Could be, I'm not sure. But if Kanata was part of the Citizen it would be fine with me. I'm still deciding if I'm going to try to get my game in shape to enter.

Kanata is nice enough, some very good holes but also a few weak ones. I'd call it good, but not great.
I'm in the same boat as Geoff. If I manage to put together a few good rounds at the start of the season I should be low enough to get in. If I stink it up, the point will be moot.

Rare are those who can play there index or lower at Kanata. Just look at the scores from last year. To me that’s a sing of a great course.

Kanata would be a great course in a completely different location. The houses, buses, kids on bikes and walks between holes just plain suck.

I’m talking about the course and not it’s surroundings. I agree that the houses and walks between holes suck. That takes away beauty but it does not change that it’s a very difficult and fun course to play. Very challenging. For me, a course that is in great condition, makes you think on every shot and penalises you when you trip, that a great course.
Look at HP for instance, most players that hate the course can’t play it.Strive for perfection, but never expect it!

Kanata is a good course. The trick to play it, I find, is to hit barely past the 150 marker. After my injury last summer, I played my best game at Kanata with only a 3 wood.
Someone is real real close. At least this year, it's not the clublink open...

Take out Rideauview, unless they are doing the tourney for advertising for a membership drive..
