Hylands golf course

Hi, anyone ever played Hylands as I am looking for feedback on the course as I just bought my membership there.

I have been a member the last couple of years, the course actually opens tomorrow. The range has been open for about a week, and you can hit off of grass instead of mats. Last year the course was in very good shape although they could cut the greens a bit shorter in my opinion. Two 18 hole courses , North and South, with the North being a bit more difficult in my opinion. Overall a very good facility and you can't beat the price as far as membership goes. Maybe we can hook up for a tee time at some point.

A very friendly course where, in my opinion, it is hard to lose a ball (not much water and pine trees everywhere). Always in very good shape. The new Tee-time Reservation system is a nice improvement this year and should prove a major time-saver.

I differ opinion a little on the greens. I found them really fast last year and a pleasure to putt on. They are a nice size.

The North course is a little tougher and the addition of a pew bunker last year really added to the challenge.

You'll enjoy it very much... best deal in town.

Thanks for replying. I am looking forward to playing there as I have a tee off time already for today and Sunday. It is a great deal for a 36 holes golf course. I will try and play at least a 9 hole every day during the week and a 18 hole in the week end (my wife is really understanding) Maybe we will see each other on the course or in one of the many tournament that they have organised for their members.

The North course is awesome to play...a very nice layout.

I played the south track back in the mid 80's and it was a great place to play. It helps to shoot 78 and win the DND tournament as a guest 2 years in a row, and watching them scramble to find a way not to let a guest take home the "big prize". Although, as a golfer, my prize was being able to play The Highlands

What did they change about the tee-time reservation system, still the same as last year as far as I know. One of the major changes this year is no guests on weekend mornings, only members until 1130 I believe. Guests can still go as early bird though. I played this morning, teed off at 0830, it was cold, but managed to get in 18.

They have added the "team" feature where you can actually register your foursome instead of entering #'s one by one. That phone system works wonders.

Played 2 rounds this weekend. The South course is in better shape than the North. Greens are slow by Hylands standards. But my new putter works good... no 3-putts

Now we know where DND is spending their money...we don't have helicopters, but who cares, Hylands is nice & green.

Yes Hylands is nice and green... The greens on the South Course are amazing. Great shape, bright green, very true and already fast The fairways are all dry and they only have a few spots to take care off.

Spidey, if you want to get on the course, you can probably go as a walk-on during the week; especially right now, it's empty. Take an afternoon off and go play the course. My foursome plays on Mondays and today we were almost by ourselves,playing at a very leisury pace and we finished our round in 3h15min.

It is true that we don't have helicopters but physical training has always been a big part of the military and they do take good care of our needs as we are encouraged to participate in all sorts of sports to keep ourselves fit to serve our country. I have been posted to a lot of places across Canada and it is true that Hylands is the best military golf course I ever had the chance to be a member at, and trust me I do appreciate it. I intend to play every day and like nice_lag mentioned right now is the time to come in and try to play this great course as there are not a lot of people on. Saturday I ended up playing the South course by my lonesome. Hope to meet some of you out there.

I had the opportunity to play the military golf course in Trenton a couple of years ago, and I was very impressed with the shape of the course. Very green and well maintained. Would go back in a heartbeat.

I bet there's a lot of good golfers in the military with all the discipline and training that they have to go through which can be easily applied to golf.

I'd love to play Hylands again. My father-in-law used to be a member there and I'd get an invite a couple of times a year. I don't want to take all the good times, but I'd like to play there maybe once a year, just for old times' sake. But I realize it's in high demand, and even with 36 holes, it's usually packed.

I remember that The Mulligan Tour (sorry if that raises talk of the competition Dan) had an event out there about two years ago. I was planning on going and paying full price including membership just to play it once. Of course events conspired against me and I had to pull out.

I'll just have to keep my ears open.

Maybe I shall clarify my position. By walking on I meant, go to the course and ask a member if there was an empty spot in their group. It has been done a few times already this year. I would never encourage people "skipping" green fees at a golf course. Furthermore it would be totally wrong for me to encourage such an activity based on my profession.

I have been invited before by someone who was to get us on with that walk-on staus. I was asked to show up very early (during the summer) as there are quite a few that are already lined up to go. I beleive its like "ball in rack". But if you wish to play this is the time of year where the line isnt that long, right?

I agree with you, I am a member also, was not trying to find out how to sneak on to the course. Played yesterday on the south, we need some rain and some warm weather. Overall, not too bad. Steve, you are referring to what the Hylands calls "early-bird" and you can still bring guests for that. You can show up and as you say, put your ball in a rack. The ranger/marshall then drives around later and takes your name and you pay after your round is complete.

"Sneaking in" at a military property just doesn't seem like a smart idea to me even on a golf course.

Can you imagine getting caught and being escorted out by men with guns!!!

I would like to play the Hylands but am obviously not a member. How much does it cost to show up and play? Can anyone do this?

The fee structure at Hylands is the following:

Civilians: Weekday 33
Weekend 40
Twilight 20
Military: Weekday 25
Weekend 30
Twilight 18

The course needs a bit of rain, like all the other courses. At least both 18's are dry and the rain will only do good. The greens on the South side are already mid-season shape. The North side will most benefit from the care they're given it right now. (That's why I am waiting before taking Dan and Steve out. Don't worry I've got 2 free passes for you guys)

For those who want to play Hylands, there's enough members on the forum. Just ask. A few people messaged me and I told them when I'm playing. Weekends, Mondays and another weekday depending on weather. I'd be more than happy to take you on the course and share with you its beauties.
