Teeing up
Gary,
This is probably in the rules book but I don't have one with me. When teeing up, can one go back as far as he/she wants? I mean, can I tee up 20 yards behind the markers if I want to? What are the limitations?
For those who wonder why one would want to do such a thing, it could put a bunker out of reach or help you use a distance you're comfortable with, etc...
Thank you.nice_lag

You're only allowed 2 club lengths.

You can tee off anywhere within the "teeing ground" which is defined under rule 11 as follows: "It is a rectangular area two-club lengths in depth, the front and sides of which are defined by the outside limits of the two tee markers." In short, you could use your longest club to mark off an area up to two-club lengths behind an imaginary line drawn between the two tee markers. Only the ball needs to be within this rectangular area, since "a player may be standing outside the teeing ground to play a ball within it."
