Coral Gables, FLA. (RCGA) – Maude-Aimée Leblanc of Windsor, Que. capped the 2006 season with an exclamation mark on Saturday by becoming the first Canadian to win the prestigious international Junior Orange Bowl Golf Championship.

The 17 year-old Leblanc claimed the girls’ title finishing an even 288, three shots ahead of American Vicky Hurst. Five others including 2006 US Junior Girls’ Champion Jenny Shin tied for third-place at 295, seven-strokes behind Leblanc.

Leblanc, the only junior-aged member on the RCGA National Amateur Team, opened the tournament with a three-over 75, but rebounded with two back-to-back under par rounds of 68 and 69 to take the lead during the third round. Her second round score of 68 tied Hurst for the low score of the week. She finished the final round shooting 76 on the par 72 Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Florida.

Past champions of the annual Junior Orange Bowl Golf Championship include LPGA Tour super-star Annika Sorenstam, Grace Park, Paula Creamer and 2006 CN Canadian Women’s Open champion Cristie Kerr. Tiger Woods, Nick Price, Sergio Garcia and Camilo Villegas are among the current PGA Tour players who have won the boy’s title.

This is just another in a long list of accomplishments for the up-and-coming Leblanc who last week was named the top junior girl golfer in Canada with her standing on the 2006 CN Future Links Order of Merit. She also garnered attention this season by claiming the Royale National Junior Girls’ and Quebec Provincial Junior Girls’ crowns as well as winning the regional Pacific and Atlantic CN Future Links Championships. She was also among the top finishers at the 2006 Royale Cup National Women’s Amateur Championship and earned an exemption into the 2005 Canadian Women’s Open.

In the Boy’s Junior Orange Bowl competition, Sihwan Kim of Buena Park, California claimed the boys title shooting a 11-under par 273. Peter Uihlein of Bradenton, Florida finished second at 274. Mathieu Rivard of Granby, Que was the top Canadian finishing tied for 28th at 295 while National Junior Boy’s teammate Jean-Philippe Paiement of Quebec City, Que. finished tied for 31st at 296.

The Junior Orange Bowl is considered the world’s largest international youth sports and arts festival and is comprised of over 20 events from October to January, including the world-famous Junior Orange Bowl Parade and the Golf Championship.
