    Soft stepping FST iron shafts

Please help me with a beginner's question:

If I have an FST Pro Black iron shaft, an S-flex requires a tip trim of 2.5" in the 5-iron. An R-flex requires a tip trim of 2.0" in the 5-iron.

If I soft step one step, and trim the 5-iron only 1.5", what flex will I get? If I soft step two steps, and trim the 5-iron only 1.0", what flex will I get?

I am building a set of irons that will include 5-PW, GW & SW. Is the tip of the FST Pro Black stiff enough for significant soft stepping?

    Thanks a million!

How to achieve a Senior Flex?

Right chief, I read both of those, which is what prompts my questions.

    1. The tip trim difference between Stiff and Regular for the 5-iron is only 0.5". So does this mean that if I tip trim the 5-iron 1.5" instead of 2.0" that I will have approximately a Senior flex?

    2. Is the Pro Black tip as stiff as the Dynamic, for example...how much can you soft step it without running into the problem of having the short irons too whippy?

    Thanks!

    rhh7,

I responded to your post at FGI.....

as for too whippy? what is your ss or 5 iron carry?

if you are concerned you can just not softstep in the short irons.....this might also help with trajectory control

    5-iron carry

My best 5-iron carry would be 160 yards.

The pro black is a pro weight shaft that comes in at approx 310 cpm raw length.

In my experience of building with the pro black 0" tip trim at the 3 iron will give you somewhere between 4.6 and 4.8 flex which is a strong R flex.

They are approx 4 cpm to the half inch of trim.

I have yet to see a pro black whippy!

    Hope this helps!

This was posted by Mack on FGI:

quote(The initial tests consist of the following:

    1. Weigh of the shaft
    2. Tip thickness (actual material thickness)
    3. Butt thickness
    4. Parallel tip section (total length)

    6. Frequency at raw length, 255 gram tip weight
    7. FLO test
    8. Zone profile at 36", 31", 26", 21", 16", 11" using a 454 gram tip weight.
