Striking w/ face of club??
Hi Gary:
I was wondering about something that I had seen a few weeks ago (I think it was Sergio who did it) one Sunday afternoon.
Whoever it was had embedded the ball in the woods to the left of the fairway and it had come to rest up against a tree root, the tree being closer to the gallery and the ball perpindicular to the green but closer to the fairway.
Anyway -long story short- by all appearances this pro popped the ball back into the fairway with the toe of his club (club rotated 90 deg. towards the ball) straight down the intended flight path (not on the face of said club)
I thought you had to hit the ball on the face and nowhere else??

Nope. The ball shall be fairly struck at with the HEAD of the club. Any part of the head will do. Toe, back, bottom, leading edge, whatever.
Of more concern to the golfer is the part about "fairly struck at". Fairly struck at means no pushing, scraping, spooning, or "pool cueing", etc.
