To "Knick" or not to "Knicker"

What's the deal with no one in the PGA sporting the knickers anymore? Is this in homage to Payne Stewart, like golf's equivalent to retiring a jersey?

    Just wondering

Frickin' stupid is wearing long pants on a day when it's 105F, but it's a PGA rule.

Wearing knickers is part of the history and lore of golf, and if Payne Stewart can make it look good, there are a lot of guys out there that could make it look better... but he did have a sweet swing.

Stoning "witches" was also a tradition from the era this fashion stems from. Some things should be lost in the annals of history.

Along with "mashies" and tweed caps.

I'd wear knickers to a golf tourney. My buddy did it for intersectionals this year.

There are adds for them at the back of Golf Mag and Golf Digest every month. One phone call, and you'll have them Faldo.

I know, I know. I even torture myself with their quarterly on-line newsletter.

    I would look sooo good

But, I would not get back in the house for about 4 days

Payne Stewart made knickers look good. I've always wanted some ever since I saw him play. I don't mind looking different than everyone on the golf course.

Since I saw the other thread on where to get some, I told my wife that I wanted some for my birthday of Christmas. I can't wait to get them.

Ben Curits is sponsored by the NFL - maybe he should wear the plus fours now.

    Is this fashion?

What is it about a golf course that inspires people to wear things that would be out of consideration anywhere else? Plus 4s and saddle shoes? Really, would anyone consider wearing them anywhere else? I know I would!

I was talking about this with my wife a few days ago, spurred on by the aforementioned plus 4 ad in Golf Digest. Let's just say that it did not get a resounding response. So I guess I'll stick with my Nike TW black pants and more understated brown and black shoes. Some things have to be put into perspective.
    Cheers,
    Tim

Not to mention some of the "costumes" PGA players wear i.e. Garcia and his banana outfit, Ian Poulter in general etc.

Beyond mere aesthetic, I think that knickers also serve a true function. Since the player's outfit is contrasted in colour at the upper calf, rather than the heel of the shoe, I think that knickers display the mechanics of the golf swing just a little bit better. Same idea with baseball uniforms.

    Knickers at the Maxim

A couple of buddies and I played in the Coors Light Maxim tourney this summer and we wore Knickers. They were very popular with the cadies ...

    We ordred them from www.golfknickers.com
We got the knickers, argyle socks and caps as a package and then bought matching golf shirts (not seen in this photo) locally.

Crap - I would have bought some if they were available locally - only because I don't think my golf game will provide enough comic relief for everyone - close, but not quite

    Knickers is not for you...

To wear knickers, you got to have class... There is no other reason. If you are too self conscious, go and wear yout TopFlite shirt from Wal Mart! It really suits you so well.
You don't like Payne Stewart, I dont like Tiger so what ? I just would love to have a piece of their swing...

They sell an argyle sweater vest there for $69.95, Reg $98.
I bought mine at Old Navy for $19.50 plus tax Looks identical to this one they are selling
