Golf ball compression
I noticed most balls do not state the compression, with a standard of 90 being acclaimed by most people I talk too. I find even the websites about golf or selling golf balls do not state the compression in most cases. I am curious if anyone thinks there is any advantage to playing a higher 100 compression ball. I have heard that in colder weather an 80 compression ball is better (sure does not feel like a rock the way 100 compression does in the cold), and I have found a few marked as such I am saving for the colder weather.
I decided to do a Google search and found:
http://www.learnaboutgolf.com/beginner/balltypes.html
It says:
Compression
Compression of a golf ball is designed to match the "feel" of the ball to the golfer's preference. Typical compression ratings are between 80 and 100, with most players using a 90 compression ball as a compromise. Many above average golfers tend to agree that hitting a 100 compression ball feels like "hitting a rock". Contrary to golfing myth, there is no correlation between compression and distance.[COLOR=DarkRed]"Friends don't let friends use Internet Explorer"

Up until about the early to mid 90's, when wound balls started to get replaced by 3/4 layer solid balls, the 100 compression ball was the "tour" ball and us mere mortals played the 90. Ladies balls were usually in the 80s.
Enter the era of the material physicist and titanium drivers and launch monitors.
All of a sudden they figured out they could engineer a ball so that it reacted differently off the driver than the irons since they were being struck at different velocities. They also discovered that low compression solid core balls went like stink when hit by a club going 110+ MPH.
These days most of the balls are sub-90 compression and some are as low as 65.

I just found another excellent article about this, very interesting eye opener. Seems it may not matter as much what the compression is anymore with the new designs, even a 4 piece ball.

LOL, thanks rick!
I would imagine people are playing titleist because they are paid to? If titleist is #1 then why does tiger play nike

The ProV1 is just a generally good ball and since most players can't get Titleist to make a ball just for them, they just play the standard ball.

Has a long discussion about ball compression, along with a lot of the ratings for different balls (direct from the manufacturers).

Titleist has been #1 for so long in golf balls and has such a huge market share that it isn't worth it for them to try and bag Tiger.
Nike on the other hand, has gone from zero to a force in the golf industry largely on Tiger's shoulders so they'll do whatever they need to to make him happy.

Check Knetgolf for compression
Knetgolf.com lists each of the balls compression. It's a great source to see which balls have the compression you're looking for.
