I like the polls that show how you vote.
golf courses will become one of the last site where you will still be able to smoke, I think.

i wish smoking was against the law period as well! I've cut down a lot to the point where I'm having a few puffs a day, thats it. Very impressed with myself. But it would be so much easier if smokes were as hard to get as a driver that I can hit. I would never smoke again!

I like the no smoking law.
The one that will bug me is if Ottawa passes the no "scent" law.
I'm not sensitive to perfume/cologne, so I don't really care one way or the other on that front. But I've heard that it could be extended to deoderant. Imagine the BO fest that Ottawa would become.

They can never put that in effect, think about how impossible it would be to actually control.

The worst BO that I ever smelt was in a taxi! OMG, I told the guy to open to window and he said "no no, I'll turn the AC on for you" but his BO was in the vents as well. I asked him to pull over, gave him 5 bucks and got another cab. Now before getting into a cab I always stick my head in first, take a wiff and then sit... or run like hell!

I am all for the new law.. As a non smoker I think its about time.. I don't live in Ottawa so I don't have the luxury of eating at resturants for the last couple of years smoke free.. I took my wife and daughter out for dinner a couple of weeks ago and we left because of the smoke.. I could just picture my 6 month old daughters little pink lungs.. Blah!

I think it's fantastic and i'm going to have to assume people who don't like it will be some of the smokers on the site. I smoked for fourteen years and quit Jan 1 and have never felt better, bring this into effect and it's a great thing i think. I actually work at the Ottawa Hospital and am involved with the no smoking going into place tomorrow, should be an interesting day at work!!

You're gonna see some shaky people. I think you should wear a T-shirt with a big no smoking sign. LOL!

DH, the law does take away your rights... it just protects the rights of a non smoker. You own or rent so thats your property, do whatever you want there. Since there are stats that back up second had smoke causing cancer.. you shouldn't be able to kill people with your smoking (I smoke to) but this will help me quit and I welcome it!

Well i think i'm big enough to pull it off safely but i think i'll pass!

I'm not a smoker but I think we've gone far enough with this sort of whining. The proposed scent law is a real winner too.
I don't see a problem with a cigar lounge, something that clearly caters to smokers but even that isn't allowed. I have also read evidence that the effects of second-hand smoke are totally over-blown by the media.
Meanwhile the government is happy to rake in taxes from the sale of cigarettes, meaning smokers pay more taxes, and generally die at a younger age. As long as they don't spend too much time in long-term care this is actually saving everyone else money. Thanks smokers!

I'd like to see heavy fines, $1000 for those who throw their butts in the street. I love the smoking band, why should I have to give up my right to be healthy for their right to kill them selves?
-
05-31-2006 03:21 PM #20
Heavy fines are great for something you don't do... If you start throwing down heavy fines for this and that eventually something you do maybe become "prohibited".
Either way I don't really care I just dont like all these laws!

If it is proven that second hand smoke causes cancer, and it is, then why only ban smoking in public places? What about children of smokers, what rights do they have?
It's pretty hypocritical of the government to do this but still profit from tobacco tax revenue. If it's bad, ban it full stop.

Wow, spack, great point. I remember when my aunt took me and my cousin go-karting about 17 years ago. I almost threw up from being in her car for an hour. Smoker, smoked with us in the car. She thought I was being difficult. Unreal.

While we're at it why not ban everything that could possibly harm someone else is any way?

Smoke is something that is a lot more tangible though. You smell it, you see it, you breath it in, and it's not pleasant.

Ok! It's time to ban comubstion engines!!
What makes me annoyed is how everyone here likes having the goverment act as mom and dad and prohibit / allow things. If you dont like 2nd hand smoke don't go sit on bar patio's etc...
The ban is just stupid anyways everyone will continue to smoke outside the front door...

Uh uh, the people who don't smoke should not have to go out of their way to avoid smoke. Natural air is just that, natural. No one should be able to fill the air with smoke around someone who doesn't want to breathe it in.

I had a tough time voting on this one because I am a smoker! Although I agree that non-smokers should have a right to not being exposed to second hand smoke, when you say that you can't have a smokers only room it is getting a bit excessive. I go to the Rideau Carleton alot and the have a semi encloed smoking area at the back for us smoking idiots to go outside and freeze our asses off in the wnter to get a puff.... it is my understanding that this is no longer allowed and they have closed it. Now you are going to see dozens of people standing outside at the front door puffing away when people are trying to get into the place! We were doing no harm to anyone hearded into our little smoking area out of sight of everyone, now we will be cursed at and mean mouthed for going out the front door of the casino..... oh well..... I voted yes by the way!

Donny; your sitting on a patio next to a street most of the time. There is way more smoke and exhaust coming from the road than smokers would cause in an outdoor setting.
I barely even smoke but I don't like the fact that slowly the country is making everyone into a criminal.

Driving is an essential. Smoking doesn't get me from point A to point B. The gov is also working on cleaning up engines by the way. But they can't, and I mean CAN NOT outlaw driving because, well, it's just not feasible.
