    OB? Hazard? wet fairway?

a friend of mine hit a ball from the tee and it sliced to the right into an area that had a lot of veg, small shrubs and lots of long grass. We saw the splash from far away. There were no stakes of any sort. He hit another one just in case, didn't see his ball anywhere but it was pretty wet and couldn't really go look for it as it was pretty deep in. IMO he would have been hard pressed to find his ball and get a club on it (not that it matters) if there was no water. Anyway, second ball off the tee was fine. He ended up playing that the rest of the hole. What was the right procedure. Could he have treated it like a lateral hazard and dropped withing 2 club lengths of point of entry? He played the second ball off the tee without penalty? should he have gotten free relief? play it as it lies? cand find it? so go back and hit it again?

PS gary if you read this, I was at your course today. Asked for you but you weren't there

The procedure you followed was correct except there is a stroke penalty.

    I don't work on Sunday.

Not sure exactly of rule number but it falls under the lost ball rule.

He was hitting three off the tee.
One for the original, two for the penalty and three off the tee again

    Details in Rule 27

    God? Is that you?
When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.
