rapid rust on a wedge
I purchased a used Cleveland 588 RTG wedge that was nicely rusted. Now after playing a few rounds, the rusted face is giving way to shiny metal. How do I get it to stay rusty? Soak it in water?

Wet a rag and wring it out so it is still wet but not soaking. Wrap the clubhead. Leave it overnight. Wipe off excess rust in the morning with a dry rag. Repeat with a fresh wet rag until the desired effect is attained. Should take 3 or 4 rounds of this.

I was told saltwater for my trusty rusty's.

I found salt water did not give me the desired effect because the rusting came out very uneven (as the rusting was excessive where the higher levels of salt were), and the extra rusting from the salt brushed off anyhow ... but really, the key is just t oget them wet ... coke, water, salt water, whatever ... you'll prolly find 1 method that provides you with the look you prefer if you try them all.NCGT Ryder Cup Team Green (06,07,08)

I agree with Nat on the Coke method. Its the best from what I've heard.

If it can rust a metal, makes you wonder what it does to your insides when you drink it?!?!?

Doesn't the COKE take the rust away i fyou want to restart it because it's too rust. For instance if I ever go somewhere special I'll put it in coke overnight get it clean than dip it in a pond at say St Andrews for memories.

Coke
Coke will clean them...not make them rust.

if you leave it in a paper towel drenched in coke it will rust...not sure about sitting it in a bucket, maybe that's when the rust comes off ?
basically any wet paper towel (water, salt water, even orange juice i assume... anything) will allow the wedge to get wet and have access to oxygen, which will lead to rusting.NCGT Ryder Cup Team Green (06,07,08)

Coke
If left in a bucket of Coke, the wedge will be as clean as you could possible get it. Pretty scary actually. Coke has the highest legal amount of phoshoric acid that a person can legally buy. As for wrapping it in a soaked towel, I did this for a week and it worked well.

not originally rusted?
I have a set of wedges that I bought a couple of years ago (orbiters...crappy sport chek wedges) and the finish on them has completely vanished in the area that actually makes contact. I'm playing with what is essentially raw metal. I was just wondering if rusting them up would make an improvement to their playability/spin. I know that it would not be an ideal solution, but I just wanted to know if it would give me at least some improvement.

I'm pretty sure you should only rust wedges that are designed to be rusty like the Cleveland RTGs and the Trusty Rusty's (brand?)
Anyone know some of the others?

Not sure I agree with that spackler. My RTG's definately grab more when freshly treated. I do them every year, and I have one wrapped up in a towel right now. This thread reminded me to get to it.

Interesting. Must be a quality placebo in my wedge!

I thought the rust would also promote more spin...thanks for the insight.

Thanks for the info...won't bother rusting them if its not going to improve the playablilty.

I use to let my Callaway's on the patio at night and it would rust with the morning dew, or leave it outside on a rainy day.
P.S. I play RAC Black TP's and there's some rust spots starting to form on the face ?!?!!
Is that normal?
