Winter Golf ??????
JUST FINISHED READING THIS.....WHAT DO YOU THINK GANG???
Golf course to stay open for winter
Members pleased about chance to play all year
The city of Hamilton has decided to keep an 18-hole golf course open this winter to take
advantage of the growing phenomenon of winter golf.
Paul Mikelbrencis, the pro at the Chedoke Golf Course, said yesterday it was
decided to keep the Chedoke Martin course open all year because winters have
become increasingly less harsh.
He also said the city was aware it was losing Hamilton golfers to courses
outside the city that stay open all year, such as Camisle in Burlington and
the St. David's and Queenston golf courses, both in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
"A lot of our members go to Camisle and St. David's, so it's not too hard to
think we'll have some of those members coming here," said Mikelbrencis. "I
think most people will like that opportunity."
Golfers playing at Chedoke yesterday welcomed the opportunity to play
year-round. The city does not plan to keep open the adjacent Beddoe Course
because some of its holes are in skiing territory. "Greens" fees for Chedoke
will be $15.
Willie Bethea, 64, a retired auto salesman, replied with a loud "absolutely"
when asked if he would play winter golf on the Chedoke Martin course.
"I'm not a fanatic, but I like the sport," he said. "I enjoy being out here.
Any opportunity to golf in the winter, if the weather is permitting, hey,
why not go out?"
Mikelbrencis said the cost to keep the course open year-round should be
minimal. They're planning to have one person in the pro-shop during the
winter, but will save on maintenance costs because, unlike Camisle, they are
not planning to plow the course if there is a heavy snow. As for his job as
a golf pro, he would work through the winter anyway, running a golf school.
Officials at Camisle, St. David's and Queenston golf courses said staying
open year-round has proved lucrative and they have no regrets about the
business decision, even though some winter days they get no business because
of snow, freezing rain or cold. Camisle has been open all year for 15 years.
The other two courses, owned by the same family, went all-year in 1980.
