Newcastle, Australia
G'day!
I've been buming around Australia the last few weeks and so glad I brought my clubs along. My friend lives in Newcastle which is about 2 hours north of Sydney. I used his place as a base for my travels.
I don't know how they make money running the golf courses. Here are the courses I played and the prices(CAD $):
Shortland $16 competition price (fair conditions)
Waratah $23 social price (excellent conditions)
Muree $15 competition price (fair conditions)
Meriweather $23 social price (excellent conditions)
Maitland $10 competition price (excellent conditions)
Morrissette $18 social price (good conditions)
Belmont $22 social price (excellent conditions)
Competition play is when you enter a tournament. Need an official handicap.
Social play is non-tournament.
I had to get used to converting metres to yards. My friend actually thought paying more than $30 was crazy when I told him how much we pay in Ottawa. There are a few expensive courses(> $60) here but most are cheap!
My favorite is called Belmont and its the nicest course I have ever played. Its a links style course right along the ocean...you could see, smell and hear the 20 foot waves crashing along the beach only metres from the fairways. I could play that course everyday and not get bored. There were a tons of exotic birds too. It only cost me $25 AUD($22 CAN). It would be like Stonebridge in Ottawa with an ocean beside it. Its amazing. I lost my focus a few times just admiring the scenery.
Most golf memberships are under $1000 and you can play all year round!!!
Too bad Australia wasn't closer to North America as it would be a great golf destination. I'll post photos when I get back to Canada.

Hello bobblehead,
I'm going to Sydney in two weeks and will have a few days to kill.. Would you be able to recommend any courses within a one-hour drive from Sydney?
Thanks,
Francois

Sorry Francois...I'm not familar with any courses in Sydney. I saw a course very close to the airport. Also, when I was in Katoomba(Blue Mountains) about 100km from Sydney there was a very nice looking course but wasn't sure if it was part of the Fairmont resort. If you have a handicap card and want to play in competitions then bring it. Its reduces the price and sometimes on social play too. If you don't then just tell them you forgot it and they are usually good about it.
I'll email my friend in Newcastle and ask him about any good courses in the Sydney area.

Don't know why Australia more than any other destination but it is the one place i have never travelled to that I really want to.
Your posts and pics have just made me that more jealous!"Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual"

With your caribbean trip, looked like it has been a great winter of golf for you TC.
The only waves I'll see this season would be from my Maxflies depositing into the local ponds.

I had to make up for it after I broke my collar bone last summer. Hopefully, I'll get a full golf season this summer. We'll have to get together for a few rounds...don't worry, I have a long ball retriever to rescue your pond balls
