Computer Formatting Help!
I just purchase an external hard drive and am having trouble with it. It was previously used on a Mac and my computer is not recognizing it. I have XP and it says its installed and ready to use, but it isn't showing up under "My Computer"

Did you try updating the driver?

i don't see this option under My Computer, and yes it is XP. Its very strange, its like it recognizes the hard drive, but doesn't at the same time. When i plugged it in, it says it is ready to use, but i can't find it anywhere in the comp.

If the filesystem is formatted for a mac you have to reformat it for windows.. fat32 or maybe ntfs. Not sure how you would do it if it isn't showing up under my computer. Check the website for that product.

Try getting your hands on Partition Magic and run it. If the computer is recgonizing it then Magic will see it as well. It is more then likely a comunication thing, XP and MAc are completely different OS's that talk to your computer in very differnt ways. P-Magic should be able to find it and you can reformat it to NTFS.

If you haven;t quite figured it out, you can right click on my computer and go to manage. In "Disk Management" it will show up, but you will need to right click on it and format the hard drive to it to the proper file system. Use NTFS, it is more secure than FAT 32, but that is all your choice. Hope this helps as well.
