    Regripping

    Hey,

I'm regripping a new set of irons and having trouble getting the old tape off.

It seems the manufacturer uses a pretty strong solvent, and the tape was pretty much melted to the shaft (can't be peeled off).

I have been able to get it off, but it is taking forever to scrape off...I've tried solvent and it's not really helping.

Anyways, just wondering if anyone knows of a good way to get this stuff off.

    Thanks,

    Nat

That's what I was thinking of...

    or some kind of torch.

Do you (or anyone else) know if temperature is really an issue when dealing w/ shafts, I can't imagine that it would ever be too hot to damage them, but just want to make sure

If you're using an electric heat gun you won't be able to get the shaft hot enough to do any damage. I'm assuming steel shafts here.

If you're going to use propane, don't heat the shaft until it gets red hot. Just heat it enough to get the tape to catch on fire. And yes, I'm serious. If you can get the tape to light, it should hopefully just burn off and leave soot on the shaft.

<Insert well ventilated room warning here.>

    lol thanks for the tip...

Whenever I'm in Golf town I see them using torches on the clubs, but wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to F anything up doing it at home

Your first mistake is watching what they do or how they do it at GT. To do it the proper way is to time consuming for the big box boys. Do it the same way a profesional clubmaker would do it. Use a heat gun and be patient! What's the hurry ? Use your utility knife to slash a groove from the far end to the butt, put the gun to it and roll it off.

Golfworks usually has a special on at this time of year for re-gripping. You get a neat tape stripper that works very well on both graphite and steel. http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_GW1101

Looks like the special is already on:http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_GW1212

Hey Garth, I already have the normal tools like the stripper, and have never had a problem regripping before.

Just this set has something wierd going on...Scraping takes a good 45 mins per club on these ones!

    regripping

if you have an old steel shaft lying around
cut it approx 6 inches from teh butt end and then cut the wide end about 45 degrees

This will allow the shaft to scrape the outside of the one with the tape on it

then if you are fussy take the handymans secret weapon and tape the other end so you dont cut your hands

This is a chaepskate approch but is effective

Should take about 2 beers to make

fyi to those interested, when scraping won't do it, a torch does a great job...

I used a hand held propane torch and it burned off everything in a few seconds, then i threw on a little solvent to get rid of the last little bits...

Man what were they taped on with????? Never had that problem. Maybe someone else got lazy and just taped over the old stuff? Or were they really old and the tape was essentially baked on?

They were brand new from the factory...

They were from Titleist, which is interesting because i've had this problem with regripping new titleist irons in the past...

From what I can tell they just use a really strong solvent that deteriorates the tape to the point where it can't be peeled off anymore.

There are actually chemical burn marks on the inside of the grips i've taken off that suggest it's a really strong solvent.

Don't try that stuff on graphite shafts. Use a butane torch to be on the safe side.
