For all the programmers out there, I highly recommend getting Grease Monkey for Firefox... it allows you to write javascript that you can run on specific (or all) sites that you visit...

for example you can write a little function that uses getElementByType to identify all the images on a page and hide them, or get the elements by their class since most advertising is stored in specific classes....can really clean up your favorite pages

Also, for the non programmers there are piles of existing scripts (like the one to hide google ads from pages) so it's worth a look
